As horse racing fans continue to build-up to the biggest race of the season, we thought we’d take a look at which 2023 Grand National trainers have won the Aintree race before.

History can often have a habit of repeating itself, so if a stable has won the race already – then, as a punter, we know they’ve at least got what it takes to win the world’s greatest steeplechase.

2023 Grand National Trainers: Which Stables Have Won the Aintree Race Before?

At present there are still 57 horses that could run in the 2023 Grand National. However, due to safety reasons the race is always capped at 40 runners.

This means 17 horses will still be scrapped between now and the big race on Saturday 15th April.

Winning the Grand National is hard enough – not only does it require a lot of luck in-running but also the skill of the trainer to get the horses to the race in peak form. With that in mind, surely it would be a big advantage to know which trainers have already managed to get their names in the Grand National history books.

There are nine trainers with possible 2023 Grand National runners that have won the race in the past. With 11 wins between them, it’s the Gordon Elliott yard that are out in front with three previous Grand National successes.

Lucinda Russell (1)

Past National Wins: 2017, One For Arthur
Lucinda Russell National Runners in 2023: Corach Rambler

Based in Scotland, Lucinda Russell’s finest hour in the National came in 2017 when her One For Arthur won at 14/1. Derek Fox did the steering that day and the pair team up again in 2023 with one of the big Grand National fancies Corach Rambler. One For Arthur also recently sadly died, so the Russell camp will be keen to win a second National in 2023 in his honour.

Emmet Mullins (1)

Past National Wins: 2022, Noble Yeats
Emmet Mullins National Runners in 2023: Noble Yeats, The Shunter

Emmet Mullins is the current Grand National-winning trainer after his Noble Yeats became the first 7 year-old to win the race since 1940 last year. The Irish handler has readied last year’s hero again as he bids to defend his title on Saturday 15th April. He’ll be looking to join the likes of Tiger Roll and Red Rum as the only recent ‘back-to-back’ National winners. Mullins could also run his former Cheltenham Festival winner The Shunter, who is owned by JP McManus.

Gordon Elliott (3)

Past National Wins: 2019, Tiger Roll, 2018, Tiger Roll, 2007 Silver Birch
Gordon Elliott National Runners in 2023: Delta Work, Galvin, Coko Beach, Fury Road, Escaria Ten, Dunboyne, Fakiera, Puntitive, Gevrey, Milan Native, Mortal, Battleoverdoyen, Defi Bleu

Gordon Elliott has the most Grand National wins to his name of the current batch of trainers – he’s bagged three wins over the years. Two of those were thanks to his popular Tiger Roll winning in 2018 and 2019, while Elliott’s first Merseyside Marathon success came in 2007 with Silver Birch. Elliott has an army of runners again, with his recent Cross-Country Chase winner Delta Work, who was third in 2022, one of his big hopes of landing win number four.

Willie Mullins (1)

Past National Wins: 2005, Hedgehunter
Willie Mullins National Runners in 2023: Gaillard Du Mesnil, Mr Incredible, Capodanno, Carefully Selected, Recite A Prayer, Captain Kangaroo

Willie Mullins is a leading Irish trainer, but has only landed the Aintree Grand National once in the past. That success also came way back in 2005 with the Trevor Hemmings-owned Hedgehunter, who rewarded favourite backers that year at 7/1. Mullins has several possible entries for 2023, with his 7 year-olds Gaillard Du Mesnil and Mr Incredible likely to be his two shortest-priced runners. Can Mullins end an 18-year baron spell in the race?

Ted Walsh (1)

Past National Wins: Papillon, 2000
Ted Walsh National Runners in 2023: Any Second Now

Ruby Walsh’s dad and the father and son combo teamed up to win the 2000 Grand National on the well-backed Papillon. It was the first winner in the Aintree showcase race for them both, but Ruby went onto win another with Hedgehunter in 2005. Walsh senior is still looking for win number two, but he’s gone close twice with Any Second Now, who has been third and second in the last two runnings. The JP McManus runner is back for more at the age of 11 and if his ‘3-2’ sequence continues – he should be winning the 2023 Grand National.

Martin Brassil (1)

Past National Wins: Numbersixvalverde, 2006
Martin Brassil National Runners in 2023: Longhouse Poet

Many might have forgotten Irish trainer Martin Brassil’s past Grand National win – but we are sure he hasn’t! The big day came back in 2006 when his former Irish Grand National winner followed up in the Aintree version the following season. Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden did the steering that day. Brassil is back this year with Longhouse Poet, who has been well-supported in the build-up to the race and certainly has a chance of giving the yard their second win in the race.

Henry De Bromhead (1)

Past National Wins: Minella Times, 2021
Henry De Bromhead National Runners in 2023: Ain’t That A Shame, Envoi Allen, Gabbys Cross, Gin On Line

Another of the ‘big gun’ Irish trainers that finally broke his duck in the National in 2021 when Minella Times powered home with his featherweight of just 10st 3lbs. The race will also always be remembered for Rachael Blackmore riding and becoming the first female winning rider of the Grand National. Henry De Bromhead has several entered again in 2023, with recent Gowran Park winner Ain’t That A Shame one of his main players.

Venetia Williams (1)

Past National Wins: Mon Mome, 2009
Venetia Williams National Runners in 2023: Royale Pagaille, Cloudy Glen

Venetia Williams went into the National record books as only the second female winning (at the time) to win the race. She followed in the footsteps of Jenny Pitman, who trained Corbiere (1983) and Royal Athlete (1995), when her Mon Mome caused a shock in 2009. The 9 year-old won the race at a massive 100/1 to send the bookies home happy – he was the biggest-priced winner since Foinavon in 1967, who also returned at 100/1. Venetia Williams could have three runners this year – ignore them at your peril.

Donald McCain (1)

Past National Wins: Ballabriggs, 2011
Donald McCain National Runners in 2023: Minella Trump

Son of Ginger McCain of Red Rum fame and he managed to follow in this father’s footsteps in 2011 when Ballabriggs won the Grand National. The horse stayed on powerfully after the elbow to give owner Trevor Hemmings his second National win at the time. Hemmings also owned Hedgehunter (2005) and went onto grab a third triumph in 2015 with Many Clouds. McCain’s string of horses has dwindled a bit in recent years, but has Minella Trump entered in 2023.
