As the leading hope for horses trained in Wales, Kitty’s Light is an eight-year-old son of Nathaniel who also won the Eider Chase at Newcastle and Sandown’s bet365 Gold Cup towards the end of last season. Mahler Mission Feared Fresh
Given a midwinter break off the back of a fine second in the Coral Gold Cup, Mahler Mission is another Irish raider for punters to note. Trained by John McConnell, the Grand National has been the plan ever since Newbury. Mahler Mission lost both of his front shoes in his last race, yet still kept on and only found the ill-fated Datsalrightgino too good.
This eight-year-old Mahler gelding was still travelling four lengths up on his closest pursuer when he fell two out in last season’s National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham. The Grand National could be the perfect race for him to atone for that tumble. With this term’s form franked, Mahler Mission is another clear contender.
Meetingofthewaters Purchased for Aintree Test
Leading Irish owner JP McManus isn’t short of horses, but it looks significant that he bought Meetingofthewaters before Cheltenham. Despite being a novice, Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old son of Court Cave won the Paddy Power Chase around Leopardstown over the Christmas period in style.
While Meetingofthewaters is a lot higher in the weights now, and it can be argued that the leading McManus contender for the Grand National is stable companion I Am Maximus, the owner’s Minella Times came out of the same race three seasons ago and triumphed at Aintree. One Last Hurrah for Roi Mage
Last year’s seventh Roi Mage has a 2lb lower mark that 12 months ago. That could help Patrick Griffin’s veteran no end as he nears the end of his career. Now a 12-year-old, this Poliglote gelding captured a Cross Country race in France in November proving he retains his ability.
Roi Mage finished second in the same Down Royal conditions race as his prep run a last season. Crack French jockey James Reveley, who rode him to the Cross Country success, will cross the Channel and take the ride again.
