2023 Players Championship Finals Preview
This weekend’s event sees the top 64 players on the Players Championship Order of Merit go head-to-head on the big stage which concludes the 30-event PC season. The participants are solely based on how much prize money they won across the 30 events.
It’s been an action-packed season of Players Championship action behind closed doors, with surprise winners along the way and this weekend everything these players have worked for over the course of the season comes to a conclusion at Butlin’s Minehead.
Michael van Gerwen won the tournament last year after defeating Rob Cross 11-6, taking home his seventh Players Championship Finals trophy and he has every chance of an eighth this time around at odds of 8/1. “Mighty Mike” has dominated this event in recent years, winning it seven of the last nine years.
There’s a new PDC major title winner on the scene too, with Luke Humphries who is the current betting favourite at 7/2. ‘Cool Hand Luke’ has won the last two major comps, the Grand Prix in Leicester back in October and the Grand Slam of Darts most recently in Wolverhampton. He is in the form of his life and if he can replicate his performances of the last few months, he could seriously take some beating once again.
Form is a big thing when it comes to darts, and there’s plenty who can have a say in this weekend’s tournament. Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphries had deep runs in the Grand Slam last week and have been playing well in the last couple of months so they can’t be ruled out.
Gerwyn Price is searching for his first major title in almost two years and having played some good darts in the second half of the season, the penny could drop this weekend. Dave Chisnall has also showed signs of vast improvement of late, as has James Wade.
It’s a very open field and we should be in for another entertaining tournament this weekend at Butlin’s Minehead.

2023 Players Championship Finals Tips: Who Are We Backing Outright?
Given his recent exhilarating form and improvement still to come, we are struggling to see past Luke Humphries @ 7/2 (pre-tournament odds) to claim his third major darts trophy.
The 28-year-old has taken his game to new heights in recent months and here at SportsLens we are backing him to go all the way and win the 2023 Players Championship Finals.
Humphries enters the tournament at seed number seven, with almost £62,000 in earnings in Players Championship events over the course of 2023, showing just how good he has been on the floor.
Just 43 days after winning his maiden major title at the World Grand Prix, Humphries took home another major last weekend. He cruised to a 16-8 victory over Rob Cross, to win back-to-back majors. On his way to lifting the Eric Bristow Trophy on Sunday, he averaged a staggering 104.69 and threw eight 180s with a 59% success rate on doubles.
‘Cool Hand Luke’ is living up to his nickname at the minute, and is throwing with ease. It’s worth nothing that Humphries became only the third player in history to win the Grand Prix and Grand Slam of Darts back-to-back along with Phil Taylor and MVG – two of the most successful players in the history of darts.
