PGA Championship 2023 Preview

With the tournament absent of any amateur competitors, the PGA Championship boasts the most competitive field of the season and the anticipation for this year’s edition is palpable.

As mentioned, Oak Hill will play host to the week’s action for the first time in 10 years in what will be its fourth time staging the event. Those who competed all those years ago and are still knocking about today will be met with a very different prospect however, after the course underwent a full-scale restoration project in 2019.

Course designers were eager to change the layout in order to better match Donald Ross’ original blueprints, which saw them reclaim hundreds of yards of fairway, remove some 600 trees, as well as create three entirely new holes. With sweeping fairways, complicated doglegs and an hourglass hole littered with bunkers on 15, achieving glory here is no mean feat.

Although the northeast has played host to this tournament more than any other region, recent iterations have been characterised by hot and sticky conditions, particularly before organisers took the decision to make this the second major of the season, rather than the fourth and final one in mid-August.

Fluctuating mid-to-low temperatures are to be expected in New York this week, with the possibility of rain and blustery conditions, which may play into the hands of some of the longer drivers in the field.

Who Are the Likely Frontrunners Heading Into the Tournament?

Justin Thomas lifted the Wanamaker Trophy in Oklahoma last year following a fascinating playoff with Will Zalatoris, who is unfortunately ruled out for the season with a back injury.

At 25/1, Thomas represents surprising value considering he is aiming for a third PGA Championship title here – a feat only achieved by five other players throughout the tournament’s history.

Elsewhere, Brooks Koepka, who won consecutive titles in 2018 and 2019, will also be after his third triumph, and holds the leading claims among the 18-strong band of LIV Golf rebels.

Recently crowned Masters champion Jon Rahm, is heavily favoured alongside Scottish Scheffler, who has four wins from 11 events in 2023. A stuttering Rory McIlroy will be hoping to regain some kind of momentum heading into the week as he attempts to put an end to his decade-long baron run in majors – his last win came in this tournament in 2014.

PGA Championship Tip 1: Xander Schauffele To Win @ 14/1 with BetUK

A major triumph has so far eluded Xander Schauffele, but it feels more like a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ for the 29-year-old.

He has all the credentials and characteristics to navigate what is newly widely regarded as one of the trickiest courses on the circuit – his PGA Tour ranking of fifth in terms of strokes-gained on approach is perhaps his most redeeming quality.

Add to that three titles in 2022 – Travelers Championship, the JP McManus Pro-Am and the Scottish Open – as well as 10 top 10’s in majors, he has an impressive resume that will surely translate to a triumph at some stage.

Whether it will be this week remains to be seen, but he has come agonisingly close before having finished second at the Open in 2018 and the Masters three years ago.

Even as an each-way selection he may be worth taking a chance on, but at 14/1 the recent Wells Fargo runner-up presents the optimum value price when removing the frontrunners from the equation.

PGA Championship Tip 2: Keegan Bradley To Win and Each-Way @ 80/1 with BetUK

80/1 is a monumental price for a former winner of this tournament, even if it was in his rookie season 12 years ago.

Nevertheless, Keegan Bradley may be worth taking as an each-way selection with his tee-to-green game ranking in the top 40 this season, and although this pick carries a significant element of risk, he still has the necessary tools to compete this week as was evident with his tied-23rd finish at the Masters last month.

Picking an outright winner from perhaps the most talented pool of favourites ever seen in golf is proving to be a difficult task when majors roll around –  the markets are spread so thin. The floor is unquestionably low for Bradley, but at 80/1, the 2022 Zoo Championship winner could well be in the mix by the close of play.
