This week we head to Los Angeles Country Club in California for the 2023 US Open where SportsLens’ resident golf experts Joe Lyons and Paul Kelly are offering up some of our very own betting tips and predictions.

This year marks the first time that the Los Angeles Country Club will host a major championship – the first in the LA area in 28 years also and the area’s first US Open in 75 years.

Our tips will be split into two sections with two picks each from Joe Lyons and Paul Kelly ahead of golf’s third major of the season.

US Open 2023 Preview

This year’s defending champion is world number eight Matt Fitzpatrick, who beat Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler by one shot with a score of -6 in 2022. The 28-year-old is available at a price of 28/1 with golf betting sites.

The US Open is back in California for the third time in five years this week, following Gary Woodland’s triumph at Pebble Beach in 2019 and Jon Rahm’s win in San Diego in 2021.

Golf Digest have ranked the course as the 16th greatest in America, evaluated on six criteria: shot options, challenge, layout variety, aesthetics, conditioning and character.

We are yet to see LACC in action against the strongest field in the game and the course will certainly propose an intimidating challenge.

Rain is almost non-existent in the area during this time of year and the 18 holes are likely to play firm and fast throughout.

Bermudagrass rough will feature in the US Open for the first time in 18 years, but there have been concerns voiced over its condition and slow growth.

Past form in the Golden State in events such as the Genesis Invitational, Pebble Beach, Farmers Insurance Open, Desert Classic and Fortinet Championship could be key when picking a winner this week.

US Open Betting Tips

Odds are correct at time of publishing and are subject to chance

Joe Lyons US Open Tip 1: Cameron Smith To Win And Each-Way @ 25/1 with BetUK

Cameron Smith has failed to make the cut in each of his last two appearances at the US Open, but a fresh situation alongside additional rest and recovery time in the LIV Golf League should play to his strengths.

His tour counterpart Brooks Koepka recently finished tied-second at the Masters and won the PGA Championship. With all the drama and chaos in the golfing world currently, players with a chip on their shoulder have extra motivation to succeed.

Smith revealed that life as a LIV player is ‘unreal’ earlier this year and as long as he’s feeling comfortable and confident there’s no reason why he can’t add a second major trophy to his cabinet.

A recent tied-ninth finish at the PGA alongside four consecutive top ten finishes at LIV point towards a strong challenge at LACC from the Australian.

His form in the state has been up-and-down, highlighted by a fourth-placed finish in the Genesis two years ago and tied-ninth in the Farmers Insurance Open in 2019.

I’m willing to take a chance on Cameron Smith to win the US Open, priced at 25/1 with the best golf betting sites.

Joe Lyons US Open Tip 2: Collin Morikawa To Win And Each-Way @ 25/1 with BetUK

Collin Morikawa finished in a tie for fourth at the 2021 US Open in San Diego and is no stranger to the area, having been born in Los Angeles and attending high school and university in California.

Last year he finished tied-fifth in Massachusetts and if healthy – following his withdrawal at the Memorial due to back spasms – the 26-year-old looks set to continue his strong run of form in the US Open.

Alongside Scottie Scheffler and Maverick McNealy, Morikawa cruised to victory in the 2017 Walker Cup at LACC. The American earned a top-six finish at the Genesis Invitational in February and outright third at the Farmers Insurance Open in January.

As one of the best ball-strikers in the sport, playing at a course that holds a premium for approach play – which Morikawa ranks first on the PGA Tour inside 100-125 yards – 25/1 is an intriguing price.

He also ranks second on the tour in strokes gained in approach and is undoubtedly amongst the greatest iron/wedge players of his generation already.

Priced at 25/1, Collin Morikawa is Joe Lyons’ second each-way selection for the US Open.

Paul Kelly US Open Tip 1: Brooks Koepka To Win @ 12/1 with BetUK

Fresh off the back of his fifth major championship victory at the PGA Championship in the second major of the year, Brooks Koepka comes to Los Angeles Country Club this week in search of his third US Open triumph and sixth major championship.

When it comes to majors, Koepka knows how to get the job done. Already this year he has a win at the PGA Championship, as well as a runner-up finish at The Masters. Not only that but the 33-year-old is playing injury free now, which is a frightening sight for the rest of the field.

Koepka has proved that when he’s at his best, he is virtually impossible to stop in the majors. He goes into the US Open this week as the fourth favourite, behind the likes of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

When Koepka finds the fairway off the tee and gets his putter rolling, he is always in contention. It’s not a ridiculous statement to say that Brooks is a modern day golfing great. Not only should this course suit his game, but the fact he seems to have a major mentality makes him extremely difficult to stop.

Do not be one bit surprised to see the five-time major champion lift his sixth major come Sunday evening and his third US Open. The rest of the field will fear seeing Koepka’s name at the top of the leaderboard. If this is the case, you can bet he will be in with a great chance come Sunday.

Paul Kelly US Open Tip 2: Max Homa To Win And Each-Way @ 28/1 with BetUK

Max Homa is enjoying his best year on the PGA Tour to date, having risen to number five in the Official World Golf Rankings. Homa has already won three times this year on the PGA Tour and has shown he can more than compete with the best players in the world.

Despite not having the best record in majors so far, Homa is a different animal now. His swing is picture perfect, with a strong driving game, incredible iron game and astute wedge and putting game to match.

If Homa can get everything together this week, which he has done so often so far this season, he could be in with a chance of his first major championship triumph come Sunday night.

Homa has never had a Top 10 finish in a major championship, but here at SportsLens, we think that could change this week at Los Angeles Country Club for the 123rd US Open.

A stellar player who has solidified himself as one of the best golfers in the world right now. All he needs to go with that is a major.
