Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Sunday: 2:35pm Doncaster – MARIE’S ROCK

The Nicky Henderson mare MARIE’S ROCK is well-known to many, being a past Cheltenham Festival winner and all that and will be a popular pick in Sunday’s Grade 2 Listed Mares’ Hurdle at Donny.

However, even though there are only five horses taking her on, if I were a backer, I’d had a few niggles.

Firstly, it’s the trip.

She’s back up to 3m 1/2f here and all her eight career wins to date have been over shorter. Okay she’s only tried this sort of yardage twice and one of those was in the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree. But she’s been beaten both times and the last twice she’s also looked a bit vulnerable in the closing stages in her races.

Marie’s Rock travelled well in the Long Distance at Newbury but found little at the business end, while last time went down 7 lengths to Bob Olinger, albeit in heavy ground.

Secondly, she’s also no spring chicken these days at 9, so is she just on a slight decline, with her last win now coming over a year ago and five runs ago? She’s also been a beaten favourite (or jfav) in two of her last four outings.

Another plus for us is that the Dan Skelton yard seem to like targeting this race – winning the last two runnings and they send West Balboa, who admittedly flopped last time at Ascot in the Long Walk but is better than that.

Yes, Marie’s Rock is the clear top-rated in the field and this will be easier that recent outings, but there is a case to be made that she’s on a tiny downward curve and I’m happy to take her on.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
