Constitution Hill Is the Champion Hurdle Favourite: Nicky Henderson’ s Star Hurdle The Festival Banker
The Nicky Henderson-trained Constitution Hill has been a short-price in the Champion Hurdle odds market for just under a year. Basically, since this star hurdler won the 2022 Supreme Hurdle (watch below) and is many people’s idea of a 2023 Cheltenham Festival ‘Super Banker’.
He’s set to go off as the big odds-on favourite for the Champion Hurdle and will feature in a bundle of day one doubles, trebles and accas. Constitution Hill will also be looking to become the nineth winner in the race for trainer Nicky Henderson and it’s hard to see that not happening.
Henderson’s most recent Champion Hurdle winners came in 2020 (Epatante) and 2018 (Buveur D’Air).
Can Constitution Hill End a 52 Year Festival Record?
Those looking to go against Constitution Hill – and there isn’t likely to be many – might look to an incredible stat that dates back to 1971.
The last horse to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and follow-up the next season in the Champion Hurdle was a horse called Bula – 52 years ago.
Yes, some might say not that many have tried, but looking back – since 2002 we’ve have 8 horses attempt it. With the most recent Appreciate It only last year (6th in the Champion Hurdle).
Champion Hurdle Odds Record: Could Constitution Hill Become The Shortest-Priced Champion Hurdle Winner EVER?
The other Champion Hurdle stat that Constitution Hill could smash is becoming the shortest-priced winner in the race – EVER. He will, of course, need to win – but if he does at 4/11 or shorter he’ll achieve this accolade too.
The Champion Hurdle Odds Suggest State Man Is The Biggest Threat To Constitution Hill
The main danger to Constitution Hill will come from State Man. This Willie Mullins runner took the County Hurdle at the Festival last season and was last seen winning the Irish Champion Hurdle. He’s certainly no slouch, but many feel he just won’t be able to cope with the pace Constitution Hill has – we’ll find out on Tuesday.
Finally, in a race that lacks depth, it’s hard to see anything else bar last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner – Vauban – getting involved. With the popular tri-cast for punters expected to be as the betting suggests – Constitution Hill, State Man, Vauban – but even that might not pay much.
