Savethelastdance & Warm Heart Head Irish Oaks Runners & Betting

If there’s one thing we love in horse racing, then it’s clashes. This feature Group 1 for three-year-old fillies pits Epsom Oaks second Savethelastdance against the Ribblesdale Stakes heroine from Royal Ascot in Warm Heart. Both fillies hail from Ballydoyle and have big reputations.

With second place worth €95,000, their Coolmore connections clearly want to mop up as much prize money as possible from this Classic. Outside the big two Irish Oak runners, Ralph Beckett sends Ribblesdale third Bluestocking across the Irish Sea from England.

There’s also representation from the Jim Bolger and Dermot Weld stables courtesy of Comhra and the Aga Khan’s Azazat. Joseph O’Brien filly Lumiere Rock split Warm Heart and Bluestocking at the Royal meeting, so will be looking to build on that. Learn more about all eight entrants below…

1. Azazat

Aga Khan-bred filly and Leopardstown distance maiden winner on testing ground. Previously held by Savethelastdance and perhaps unlucky not to get the better of Rosscarbery when runner-up in Cork Group 3 latest receiving 15lb from the winner. Drops back from open company, but up in grade. Place prospects.

2. Be Happy

Cork mile maiden winner as a juvenile on debut and testing ground. Held by Lumiere Rock on subsequent run in Curragh Group 3. Respectable Prix Penelope third on reappearance. Classic Trial form mixed at best when runner-up at Lingfield races latest. Other Irish Oaks runners have more going for them. May have pacemaker duties.

3. Bluestocking

Salisbury mile novice scorer on only start as a juvenile. Listed Classic Trial second and beaten by a head at Newbury on reappearance, but saw that form confirmed by the winner, Warm Heart, in the Group 2 Ribblesdale during Royal Ascot latest. Retains potential for same connections who won last year’s Irish Derby with Westover.

4. Comhra

Experienced homebred filly for yard that have won this race twice before. A bigger danger than her odds suggest on ratings, but there are question marks. Picked up an allergy that prevented her taking part in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and clearly wasn’t over that when trailing in last of nine in the Group 1 Pretty Polly here latest. Perhaps better judged on Irish 1000 Guineas third, when running on at the finish. Again, other Irish Oaks runners make more appeal.

5. Library

Two wins from nine career starts including game head victory in Listed contest on penultimate outing. That race a recognised trial for this one. Beaten favourite when upped markedly in trip for Group 3 Stanerra Stakes at Leopardstown and finishing seventh latest. More was expected from her in open company. Potential pacemaker for market principals.

6. Lumiere Rock

Group 3 winner at a mile on final start as a juvenile. Runner-up in the Group 3 Blue Wind at Naas and Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes during the Royal meeting latest. Pedigree doesn’t scream stamina, but overpriced on bare form when splitting Warm Heart and Bluestocking. One of the Irish Oaks runners with each way claims.

7. Savethelastdance

Top on ratings and achieved that on merit with impressive 22-length romp in Listed company at Chester races during the May Festival. Filly who clearly loves cut in the ground and perhaps her effort blunted on fast going when runner-up in the English equivalent of this at Epsom latest. Sets clear form standard. The one they all have to beat.

8. Warm Heart

Rapidly improving Coolmore homebred and versatile as regards ground. Progressed through the grades on her last three starts after soft / heavy 1m 2f Leopardstown maiden win before besting Bluestocking in Listed company at Newbury races and confirming placings in the Ribblesdale latest. A serious contender among Irish Oaks runners lining up this year.
