Trainer Gordon Elliott will be heading into the 2023 Cheltenham Festival with a decent haul of 34 wins at the biggest jumps meeting on the planet – however, did you know that only ONE of those Cheltenham winners came in a big championship race?

34 Cheltenham Festival Winners (and counting)Â – But Only One BIG Race Success for Gordon Elliott
Trainer Gordon Elliott got off the mark at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2011 when Chicago Grey won the National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup and since then many other winners at the big Prestbury Park meeting have followed.
Twelve months ago, at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival, County Meath trainer Gordon Elliott sent out another winner – Commander Of Fleet – who landed the Coral Cup. That success was Festival winner number 34 for the three-time Grand National winning handler, but despite having plenty of firepower over the years, the bulk of Elliott’s Cheltenham Festival winners have been in the slightly lesser races.
DID YOU KNOW? Gordon Elliott’s haul of 34 Cheltenham Festival winners is the same as former trainer Martin Pipe – who Elliott used to ride for.
Yes, of course, any winner at the Festival is worth shouting about and with a haul of 34 wins for Elliott that’s not to be sniffed at – only the likes of Fulke Walwyn (40), Paul Nicholls (46), Nicky Henderson (72) and Willie Mullins (88) have trained more over the four-day meeting.
Four-time Festival winner Tiger Roll is one of Elliott’s highlights, but it’s still surprising that he’s only managed to fire in one winner in the main five championship races – the Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, Stayers’ Hurdle, Ryanair Chase and Gold Cup.

Elliott’s Sole ‘Big Race’ Cheltenham Festival Win Came In The 2016 Gold Cup
It was back in 2016 that Gordon Elliott’s biggest Cheltenham Festival winner landed, when the Gigginstown House Stud- owned DON COSSACK won the Gold Cup (watch below).
His 9 year-old, who was ridden by Bryan Cooper, was sent off as the 9/4 market leader that day and duly rewarded favourite backers with an easy 4 1/2 length win over the Willie Mullins pair – Djakadam and Don Poli.
However, if it wasn’t the fall of Cue Card at the third last fence – Elliott might still be looking for his first ‘big race’ Cheltenham Festival winner. The Colin Tizzard former King George VI Chase winner was still travelling well at the time of his tumble and many racing fans feel – had he have stood up – would have gone onto win the Gold Cup that year.
Of course, we’ll never know – but what we do know is that despite Elliott’s 34 Cheltenham Festival wins over the years he’s still a staggering way off the tally of Mullins (14), Nicholls (18) and Henderson (19) when it comes to firing in winners in the ‘big five’ races.
Don Cossack didn’t race again after winning the 2016 Gold Cup.
