Champion Chase Runners 2023: Edwardstone a Big Challenger to Energumene

edwardstone

The latest 2023 Champion Chase runners sees last year’s winner Energumene heading the betting, but it’s a tight call with the 2022 Arkle Chase victor Edwardstone and recent Clarence House Chase hero Editeur Du Gite not far behind in the Champion Chase betting.

The Champion Chase Betting Suggests a Three-Horse Battle

If the Champion Chase betting is anything to go by then we could be in for a cracking renewal of the day two 2m contest with three horses at the head of the market all sure to have their supporters.

Looking at the Cheltenham Festival odds, last year’s winner Energumene is just about edging it at this stage as the market leader @ 6/4 with BetUK, but hot on his heels are Edwardstone @ 15/8, who took the Arkle Chase at the Festival 12 months ago, and also the Gary Moore-trained Editeur Du Gite @ 11/2.

Energumene Looking to Join Altior & Sprinter Sacre as Two-Time Champion Chase Winners

Energumene only lost over fences for the second time (10 runs) last time out when third in the Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham, but the bookies are still not taking any chances with the Tony Bloom-owned 9 year-old in the betting.

The Mullins horse is likely to go off the Champion Chase 2023 favourite and will rate a solid Cheltenham Festival betting tip for many on day two of the meeting. While with the Champion Chase a fair race for returning winners, then Energumene has this stat in his corner.

Since 2003, we’ve seen Moscow Flyer, Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre and Altior all win the Champion Chase twice.

Did You Know? Energumene Was Trainer Willie Mullins’ First Champion Chase Winner

The slightly surprising Cheltenham stat is that trainer Willie Mullins was only recording his first win in the Champion Chase last year when Energumene did the business. Breaking that duck also meant that Mullins has now won all the four main Cheltenham Festival races – having landed the Gold Cup (Al Boum Photo), Champion Hurdle (Annie Power, Faugheen, Hurricane Fly) and Stayers’ Hurdle (Nichols Canyon, Penhill) over the years too.

Arkle Winners Have A Fair Champion Chase Record The Following Season

If you fancy a bit of Edwardstone for the Champion Chase, then then you might feel even more confident after knowing 7 of the last 20 Champion Chase winners won the Arkle Chase the following season – something Edwardstone managed 12 months ago and, therefore, a trend he’ll be looking to uphold.

40% Of the Last 10 Clarence House Chase Winners Won The Champion Chase

Another decent trial race for the Champion Chase in recent years has been the Clarence House Chase, which is normally staged at Ascot. This year, however, the Grade One Chase was rerouted to Cheltenham due to bad weather at the Berkshire track and was won by the Gary Moore-trained Editeur Du Gite.

This front-running 9 year-old had Edwardstone back in second (head) and Energumene (6 1/2 lengths) back in third – he’ll be looking to follow the likes of Sprinter Sacre (2013), Sire Du Grugy (2014), Dodging Bullets (2015) and Altior (2019) and Clarence House/Champion Chase winners in the same campaign.
