Champion Hurdle Runners 2023: Constitution Hill vs State Man

state man

The latest 2023 Champion Hurdle runners sees Constitution Hill, who many are billing as ‘a Monster’, the big favourite to win the opening day feature race – with State Man, who won the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown at the Dublin Racing Festival in February, his biggest rival.

Has Constitution Hill Scared Off The 2023 Champion Hurdle Runners?

Constitution Hill romped away with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the meeting last year and having since mopped up the Fighting Fifth and Christmas Hurdle this season will head back to the Festival 5-from-5 over hurdles.

Therefore, it’s no shocker that Constitution Hill @ 1/3 with BetUK is going to be one of the big Cheltenham Festival betting tips over the four day meeting and will surely figure in the most accas with  the ‘banker punters’.

As a result of Constitution Hill being a Champion Hurdle runner, this has also likely scared off some of the others – with many feeling that they will only be playing for places and it could turn into a ‘race-within-a-race’.

Current Champ Honeysuckle Expected To Miss The Race

One of the biggest names that is bypassing the Champion Hurdle is the current champ Honeysuckle, who this season has finally lost her unbeaten record with two defeats in Ireland.

Due to those losses, and the likely domination of Constitution Hill, her connections are expected to opt for the easier Mares’ Hurdle (4:10) option, which will be the race after the Champion Hurdle on the opening day – she’s the current favourite @ 9/4 with BetUK.

Can State Man Give Constitution Hill a Race?

However, one of the horses that has held his ground in the Champion Hurdle is the Willie Mullins-trained State Man.

He’s certainly going to be the biggest threat to Constitution Hill having impressed in winning the Irish Champion Hurdle last time at Leopardstown. Just like the Henderson horse, State Man’s also got a string of wins next to his name and will be coming into the race having won his last six – one of which was the County Hurdle at the Festival 12 months ago.

He’s now a four-time Grade One hurdle winner and having beaten the current Champion Hurdler Honeysuckle by 4 3/4 lengths last time certainly brings top class form to the race.

Many feel he might just lack the pace that Constitution Hill has, but having won over further (2m 3 1/2f) in the past and also having the Cheltenham Hill to help connection may try and make this more of a stamina test from the front. Regardless, it’s’ fair to say he’s got a chance of upsetting the odds and is certainly not going to be without his supporters, especially with the favourite being little value.

The Last Horse To Do The Supreme Novices’/Champion Hurdle Double Was in 1971!

The slightly surprising stat that last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Constitution Hill will be looking to break is becoming the first horse since Bula in 1970 and 1971 to win the Supreme and the follow-up in the Champion Hurdle the following season.

If Constitution Hill wins at 4/11 or shorter – the horse will also become the shortest-priced Champion Hurdle winner in history.

It’s Henderson vs Mullins In The ‘Day One’ Cheltenham Festival Feature

The added sub-plot to the Champion Hurdle is that Cheltenham heavyweight trainers – Willie Mullins (State Man) and Nicky Henderson (Constitution Hill) will also being going head-to-head.

Before the 2023 meeting, the training legends have a monster 160 Cheltenham Festival between them (Mullins 88 & Henderson 72) and it will be one of the shocks of the four days if one of them isn’t adding to their tally here.
