Cheltenham Festival Trends on Day Three: Thursday 14th March 2024

Onto day three at the Cheltenham Festival – so over halfway through and we’ve another seven races to take in that are  headlined with the Ryanair Chase and the Stayers’ Hurdle.

The action gets going with the Turners’ Novices’ Chase (1:30) – a race the Paul Nicholls-trained Ginny’s Destiny will be a popular pick in, but does he tick the Cheltenham stats?

It’s the Pertemps Final Network Handicap Hurdle (2:10) next – a super-competitive contest as always but with 3 winners in the last six respect anything Gordon Elliott runs. But this is a race Willie Mullins is yet to win.

One of the main races is next – the Ryanair Chase (2:50), where last year’s winner Envoi Allen will be back to defend his crown at the age of 10 and looks to have the consistent Banbridge standing in his way.

Onto the Stayers’ Hurdle (3:30) – the Championship race of the day and it’s all set up to be another cracking renewal, with last year’s third Teahupoo hoping to go two places better than last season, while last year’s shock hero – Sire Du Berlais – is also back at the age of 12. He’ll be running at the Festival for a seventh time.

The Plate Handicap Chase (4:10) is next – a race the Irish have only won five times since 1982. While the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (4:50) is the penultimate race and a chance to see some potential female equine stars of the future. Willie Mullins is still looking for this first win.

Then, the curtain comes down on day three with the Kim Muir Handicap Chase (5:30) – a race for the amateur jockeys so having an experienced rider in your corner here is key – Angel’s Dawn won the prize 12 months ago and could be back for more. It’s also another Festival race trainer Willie Mullins is yet to win.
