2023 Cheltenham Best Backed Horses Revealed by The Bookmakers

With less than a week till the tapes go up for the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, the ‘best backed horses’ are taking shape. Some of the best horse racing betting sites have released the horses that punters have be betting on the most – let’s take a look.

Nicola McGeady from Ladbrokes told the Racing Post “Surprisingly, the biggest single liability we have on a horse so far is Rouge Vif in the Grand Annual. He was backed into 16-1 (from 40) after his trainer Harry Whittington made bullish remarks about targeting this race. “In the Gold Cup it is Galopin Des Champs who punters want to be with, while the volume of bets in favour of Shishkin has been significant also and he is now the only other odds-on shot of the week alongside his stablemate Constitution Hill.”

1. GALOPIN DES CHAMPS (Gold Cup) @ 13/8 with BetUK

Top of the tree of the best backed Cheltenham horses for 2023 is the Gold Cup favourite Galopin Des Champs. This Willie Mullins runner has won 5 of his 6 starts over fences, with this only blot coming when falling at the last in the Turners last season. He’s since won the Irish Gold Cup and is currently the horse most of the bookmakers are taking the most bets on.

2. SHISHKIN (Ryanair Chase) @ 4/6 with BetUK

Next up in the bookies best back horses for Cheltenham is Shishkin. Flopped in the Champion Chase last year but bounced back to form to win the Ascot Chase last time out. Stepped up in trip that day and since has been the clear favourite for the Ryanair Chase on the Thursday. Will be looking to give trainer Nicky Henderson his third win in the race, having won it in 2006 and 2012.

3. GERRI COLOMBE (Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase) @ 6/4 with BetUK

Leading fancy from the Gordon Elliott yard is yet to lose over fences. Last since winning the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown – staying on really well. Up in trip here looks sure to suit and is sure to figure in many ‘day two’ Cheltenham banker bets on the Wednesday. He’s currently the third best-backed horse for the Cheltenham Festival.

4. MIGHTY POTTER (Turners Novices’ Chase) @ 11/10 with BetUK

Another top chance for the Gordon Elliott camp. This former hurdler is making into a better chaser and will head to the Festival 3-from-3. He was last in winning form at the Dublin Racing Festival when winning the Ladbrokes’ Novice Chase. Expected to go well, but those against will note he didn’t run well on his last run at Cheltenham (pulled up Supreme Novices’ Hurdle).

5. LOSSIEMOUTH (Triumph Hurdle) @ 15/8 with BetUK

This talented mare had her colours lowered last time at Leopardstown when second in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle. However, the Rich Ricci-owned mare wasn’t given the best of rides that day by Paul Townend and many feel with more luck in-running can get back to winning ways. She’ll also get a handy 7lbs mares’ allowance here and sits fifth in the best backed horses for Cheltenham table.

6. JONBON (Arkle Novices’ Chase) @ 6/4 with BetUK

Runner-up in the Supreme last season but has since switched to fences and is yet to lose a race. Hard to work hard the last day to get the job done at Warwick but stayed on well to win going away in the end. Expected to relish the stiff finish and beat his main rival (albeit by a neck) at Aintree last April.

7. DELTA WORK (Cross Country Chase) @ 11/10 with BetUK

Won the Cross-Country Chase last season and is back to defend his crown. Has also since run third in the Grand National at Aintree and is the third Gordon Elliott runner to figure on the top ten best backed Cheltenham Festival list.

8. GAILLARD DU MESNIL (National Hunt Chase) @ 11/10 with BetUK

This Willie Mullins runner will be the horse punters will look to as the winner of the last race on the opening day. He’s yet to finish out of the first three from 8 runs over fences but has only won once. Third in the Irish Grand National last season too, so we know he stays. Not the quickest – however, brings a bit of class to this staying race that Mullins also won last year.

9. OSCAR ELITE (Ultima Handicap Chase) @ 12/1 with BetUK

Next on the best backed horses list is this Joe Tizard runner. He won well at Ascot last time out in the Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase – his first success from 9 over fences. Has only been raised 4lbs for that win, so many feel he’s still got something in-hand from the handicapper.

10. ROUGE VIF (Grand Annual) @ 14/1 with BetUK

Useful sort 2-3 seasons ago, including third in the 2020 Arkle Novices’ Chase. Has rather lost his way since but is back with the Harry Whittington yard after a spell away from them and at Paul Nicholls. Rated just 137 now and considering he was off a mark of 159 just two years ago, you can see why punters are latching onto him.
