Chelsea vs Middlesbrough Preview and Prediction
The Blues suffered a shock defeat in the opening leg of this EFL Cup semi-final, as Hayden Hackney secured a 1-0 victory for Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side had looked to be improving prior to this defeat, winning three straight matches and also picked up three points in their most recent league fixture against Fulham.
Sitting ninth in the league and 12 points off the top four, Chelsea’s main chance of success this season could come in the EFL Cup – making this match crucial.
Their opponents will take great confidence from the first leg, but Michael Carrick’s side are coming off a disappointing draw with Rotherham in the Championship.
Boro are currently 11th in the table and are just three points off the play-off positions, as they look to return to England’s top-flight for the first time since 2016/17.
With this in mind, we expect the Premier League side to impose their clear superior quality and overturn the 1-0 deficit – making it to the EFL Cup final.

The England international has been one of the standout players this season, contributing to 13 goals in 17 league appearances (9G+4A).
