European heavyweights Ajax are looking a lot lighter ahead of their return Europa League in midweek.
They head to England amid their most tumultuous start to an Eredivisie season ever. Their worst ever finish – 13th in 1965 – seems like a dream prospect in comparison to their current predicament.
After losing 4-3 to Utrecht last time out, the four-time Champions League winners find themselves in the relegation zone having won just one of their seven league games thus far.
They have also been held to consecutive draws in each of their appearances in Europe this season, although they may take a slither of comfort from their spirited opening stalemate against Marseille.
They come up against Brighton, who despite putting on some of the most attractive displays on football on the continent this season, find themselves with just one point from two games in the Europa League.
They return to the Amex Stadium having salvaged a famous late point in Marseille on their first ever European away day. The Seagulls have endured a tough run of fixtures in all competitions as of late, but we expect them to relish the opportunity of coming up against a side with rock-bottom confidence on Thursday.

It is almost inconceivable that a team who have won the title in six of the last 10 Eredivisie seasons find themselves in danger of relegation.
It is hard to pinpoint where it has all gone wrong for Ajax this season, but there are little, if any, redeeming qualities to take from this current cohort.
They come up against a Brighton side who have a lot to prove having failed to win in their last five in all competitions. We expect Roberto De Zerbi to come out and seize the opportunity for victory in typically ruthless style.
The Seagulls have still been fruitful in front of goal, even if they haven’t been finding the necessary edge for all three points.
They are the second-highest scoring side in the Premier League, and 10 of their 12 games in all competitions have seen over 3.5 goals. Against an Ajax side who have conceded three or more in four of their last six, this could prove a shrewd selection.

Granted all three of his goals have been penalties, but Joao Pedro’s haul in Europe is enough for us to take a chance on him as a goalscorer.
Not only is he deadly from the spot, but he will likely be handed a starting berth with De Zerbi keeping one eye on Sunday’s fixture with Fulham.
At 6/4 he is among the more favourable prices for likely goalscorers, and the competition’s leading man in front of goal can add to his tally here.
