Jockey Nico de Boinville is set to return from injury at Market Rasen this Friday – if the meeting can survive the weather – just three weeks after breaking his collarbone at the end of December at Doncaster.

Nico de Boinville Booked To Ride At Market Rasen On Friday

Former Cheltenham Gold Cup winning jockey Nico de Boinville was staring at a lengthy time on the sidelines after breaking his collarbone on December 29th in a nasty fall from a horse called Therapist at Doncaster.

As a result, de Boinville was expected to miss most of January and with that rides on Jonbon in Saturday’s Clarence House Chase at Ascot and Constitution Hill at Cheltenham next week. However, it turns out the last-named won’t run now anyway in the International Hurdle and head straight to the Festival in March – but should he have taken in that race, de Boinville would have been back to ride.

The healing process has clearly been a lot smoother than first expected and Nico, who has ridden 45 winners this season, has already been riding out at Nicky Henderson’s yard last weekend – riding three lots.

This return to fitness has now led to de Boinville being booked to ride two Henderson horses at Market Rasen on the Friday ITV Racing card (see below) – as long as the Lincolnshire track can dodge the freezing weather that has claimed so many meetings this week already.

  • 3:00pm – Kutaiba

Market Rasen are due to hold a precautionary inspection on Thursday.

Nico de Boinville Could Ride Jonbon This Weekend At Ascot (If On)

With one of the big Henderson stars Jonbon also expected to run this weekend in Ascot’s Clarence House Chase, Nico de Boinville’s return couldn’t have been timed much better.

Ascot, who have the covers down, will also been to hope the weather is kind to the Berkshire track.

When Henderson was asked about de Boinville riding Jonbon he said – “Nico is not going to tell us he’s fit to ride if he’s not, so let’s see how he is. He’s got to pass doctors and everything, and they are the ones who call the tune, to be honest.”

“Nico could say he’s fine but it doesn’t mean the medics will. I hope for Nico’s sake he is, but we’re covered. James Bowen has been doing great and we’re ready for all eventualities. Jonbon worked great this morning and it’s all systems go.”

Henderson has won the Clarence House Chase six times in the past, more than any other trainer. While jockey Nico de Boinville has two wins under his belt – Altior (2019) and Shishkin (2022).

Should the Clarence House Chase be called off, then there is every chance it will be re-routed to next Saturday’s Cheltenham Trials Day card, just like in 2013, 2017 and 2023.
