On this day at Aintree tweleve months ago, Manchester United legend – Sir Alex Ferguson – was hitting the back of the net when three horses he part-owned all won at the Liverpool track. The same three horses are back for more at Aintree on day one of their Grand National Festival – can lightning strike twice for the former Red Devil’s manager?
Yes, last year on the opening day of the Aintree Grand National Festival, Sir Alex was cracking open the red wine after Clan Des Obeaux, Protektorat and Monmiral all obliged in their races to land the 108/1 treble – all three are back from more today, albeit two are in the same race!

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aintree Runners – Thursday 7th April 2022
2.55 Aintree – CLAN DES OBEAUX @ 13/2 with BetUK – Took this race 12 months ago for Fergie and his other owners by a staggering 26 lenghts. Is now a 10 year-old but this consistent former King George VI Chase winner has been lightly-raced this season (2 runs) and this has clearly been the target again. We know the flatter tracks suit and it’s also interesting the first-time blinkers are on today as connections try and eke out a bit more improvement from the old boy.
2.55 Aintree – PROTEKTORAT @ 11/4 with BetUK – Ran a blinder to be third in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham last time out and on that run brings the best form into this race. Still only 7, this Dan Skelton runner is still young enough to improve more, while he’s also back to Aintree – a track he’s 2-from-2 at. He’s also never finished out of the first three from 8 runs over fences. A big run looks on the cards for this Fergie runner that he part-owns with John Hales.
3.30 Aintree – MONMIRAL @ 15/2 with BetUK – Won today’s opening race 12 months ago in the style of a horse going places. Hasn’t quite kicked on since but has only had two outings this term and at the age of just 5 this Paul Nicholls runner has plenty of time on his hands. A return to this flat track could do the trick to see him getting back to winning way.
