Grand National Runners List
There are so many more horses entered than just the 40 that can run in this race. That is part of what makes any Grand National runners list so intriguing. We are dealing with one of the biggest horse racing events anywhere in the world here. Racehorse trainers plot the entire season around getting the equine athletes to peak fitness at Aintree.
While jockey bookings won’t be known until the week of the race, Grand National runners and riders are still worth looking at. Below you will find all the information you need on those entered in the big race. There are Grand National runners and weights they carry side by side with ages, trainers and recent form to help you find the right horse for you:
1. Minella Times
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
- Jockey: Rachael Blackmore
- GN Rating: 161
- Weight: 11st 10lb
- Recent Form: 221-FP
- Odds: 10/1
Last year’s winner now 15lb higher in the weights and not won since. Bound to have been trained for another tilt at Aintree glory, though, but will find things tougher off career high mark and topweight.
2. Delta Work
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Jack Kennedy
- GN Rating: 160
- Weight: 11st 9lb
- Recent Form: U3-4661
- Odds: 11/1
Ended two-year drought without a win as the Cheltenham Festival party pooper when denying Tiger Roll a winning retirement in the Cross Country. Looked rejuvenated on heavy ground but not guaranteed to get it at Aintree. National course will be a sterner test of jumping too.
3. School Boy Hours
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Noel Meade
- Jockey: Sean Flanagan
- GN Rating: 142
- Weight: 10st 5lb
- Recent Form: 2436-1P
- Odds: 28/1
Paddy Power Chase winner on penultimate start needed every yard of that to win at Leopardstown. Previously thought a sound surface was unsuitable but didn’t like conditions at Cheltenham when pulled up in the Kim Muir latest. Replaces owner-companion Easysland.
4. Any Second Now
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Ted Walsh
- Jockey: Mark Walsh
- GN Rating: 159
- Weight: 11st 8lb
- Recent Form: P13-961
- Odds: 11/1
Unlucky third in last year’s Grand National off 7lb lower when hampered at the 12th. Campaigned over hurdles by his trainer after that and got up on the line in Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse latest, so looks sure to have this as his target. Obvious candidate despite rise in the weights, if granted better fortune in this lottery.
5. Run Wild Fred
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Davy Russell
- GN Rating: 158
- Weight: 11st 7lb
- Recent Form: 22-2122
- Odds: 16/1
Last year’s runner-up in the Thyestes and Irish National broke maiden tag over fences in the Troytown Handicap at Navan this autumn. More to come from this second season chaser, but the way Stattler breezed past him to win the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham is a concern.
6. Lostintranslation
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Colin Tizzard
- Jockey: Harry Cobden
- GN Rating: 157
- Weight: 11st 6lb
- Recent Form: 5P-15P8
- Odds: 66/1
Haydock Betfair Chase scorer in 2019 ended two-year drought after breathing issues with success in 1965 Chase at Ascot in November. Luckless third attempt at King George around Kempton and also pulled up in Ascot Chase. Beaten almost 20 lengths in the Ultima at Cheltenham latest, so needs to find consistency.
7. Brahma Bull
- Age: 11yo
- Trainer: Willie Mullins
- Jockey: Brian Hayes
- GN Rating: 157
- Weight: 11st 6lb
- Recent Form: 02333PU
- Odds: 125/1
Pat Taaffe Handicap winner at last season’s Punchestown Festival after finishing down the field in Irish National. Runner-up in Kerry National before good third back at Punchestown and filled the same spot in Ladbrokes Trophy under a welter burden. Doesn’t look well-handicapped, though, and unseated on first try in Cross Country at Cheltenham.
8. Burrows Saint
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Willie Mullins
- Jockey: Paul Townend
- GN Rating: 156
- Weight: 11st 5lb
- Recent Form: 624-323
- Odds: 25/1
Irish National winner in 2019 and fourth here last season, so Aintree a confirmed target target once again. Weakened out of contention on the long run-in that day but another year older and good second behind Al Boum Photo at Tramore before underwhelming third in Bobbyjo Chase. Still respected.
9. Mount Ida
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Denis O’Regan
- GN Rating: 156
- Weight: 11st 5lb
- Recent Form: 213-117
- Odds: 66/1
Impressive Kim Muir scorer at Cheltenham last season, who was ridden cold and has won first two starts starts against her own sex over shorter distances this term. Ran way below expectations when last of seven finishers in Mares Chase at the Festival latest jumping poorly and markedly right.
10. Longhouse Poet
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Martin Brassil
- Jockey: Darragh O’Keeffe
- GN Rating: 155
- Weight: 11st 4lb
- Recent Form: 231-717
- Odds: 16/1
Beat Run Wild Fred on final start of last season, but posted career best when ante post gamble landed in Thyestes Chase on penultimate outing. Maintained fitness over hurdles since. Crafty trainer has won the Grand National before, so this one respected despite 10lb higher mark from Gowran glory.
11. Fiddlerontheroof
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Colin Tizzard
- Jockey: Brendan Powell Jr
- GN Rating: 155
- Weight: 11st 4lb
- Recent Form: 23-122
- Odds: 16/1
Consistent chaser and never out the frame in nine starts over fences. Placed at both Cheltenham and Aintree festivals as a novice last term, and has won in Listed company since. Gallant staying on runner-up in the Ladbrokes Trophy after that and hit the crossbar again when filling same spot in Swinley Chase at Ascot latest.
12. Two For Gold
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Kim Bailey
- Jockey: David Bass
- GN Rating: 154
- Weight: 11st 3lb
- Recent Form: 3U-112
- Odds: 40/1
Grade 2-winning novice chaser with three recent wins on CV, including both outings this term. Followed-up on Doncaster handicap success with Fleur De Lys Chase victory at Lingfield and ran another belter when runner-up in Ascot Chase latest. Unseated rider at the Canal Turn in the Topham over the National fences, however.
13. Santini
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Polly Gundry
- Jockey: Nick Scholfield
- GN Rating: 153
- Weight: 11st 2lb
- Recent Form: 53P-428
- Odds: 50/1
Two years without a win but runner-up in 2020 Cheltenham Gold Cup and back to something like his best when filling same spot in Cotswold Chase at that venue on penultimate start. Left Nicky Henderson for a smaller stable last summer. Potentially well-handicapped on pick of his form. Eighth in this season’s Gold Cup.
14. Samcro
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Sean Bowen
- GN Rating: 152
- Weight: 11st 1lb
- Recent Form: 602803
- Odds: 80/1
Coming down in the weights and has certainly peaked. Not the force of old for some time and did have issues with his lungs and breathing earlier in his career. Connections have others with stronger cases than this once mighty horse. Third at Down Royal latest and last won in May 2021 at Killarney.
15. Escaria Ten
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Adrian Heskin
- GN Rating: 152
- Weight: 11st 1lb
- Recent Form: 123P-82
- Odds: 20/1
Third in last season’s National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham but then pulled-up in Irish Grand National. Came on for return to action when eighth in the Thyestes, however, when mugged on the line in the Bobbyjo. Retains potential for a top Irish stable, especially on softer surface.
16. Good Boy Bobby
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies
- Jockey: Daryl Jacob
- GN Rating: 150
- Weight: 10st 13lb
- Recent Form: 2-31217
- Odds: 33/1
Wetherby wins either side of head defeat in Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle this season. Well-placed by connections to land the Rowland Meyrick but up 4lb for that and was all out. Couldn’t build on that when seventh in Kempton Grade 3 latest.
17. Romain De Senam
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: David Pipe
- Jockey: Philip Armson
- GN Rating: 142
- Weight: 10st 5lb
- Recent Form: B134-P
- Odds: 200/1
Now on third British stable and pulled up on debut for Pipe’s Pond House team when always towards the rear in Midlands Grand National latest. Has stamina to prove and replaced Lord Du Mesnil.
18. Coko Beach
- Age: 7yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr
- GN Rating: 150
- Weight: 10st 13lb
- Recent Form: 46P644
- Odds: 80/1
Thyestes and Ten Up winner as a novice last season. Seventh in the Irish Grand National, but hasn’t appeared to have got home in any of his subsequent outings. Connections likely have runners with better claims and this may come too soon in his career.
19. De Rasher Counter
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Emma Lavelle
- Jockey: Adam Wedge
- GN Rating: 149
- Weight: 10st 12lb
- Recent Form: 4P/2-4
- Odds: 66/1
Should come on for first run in 489 days when fourth in the Denman Chase at Newbury. Back form includes 2019 Ladbrokes Trophy success but had just two races in the last two years. Difficult horse to assess.
20. Kildisart
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Ben Pauling
- Jockey: James Bowen
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 12lb
- Recent Form: 52/37-4
- Odds: 66/1
Grade 3 handicap chase winner on the Mildmay course back here in 2019 but no win since. Shaped nicely after 462-day racecourse absence when staying on into fourth over inadequate trip in Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury on return.
21. Discorama
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Paul Nolan
- Jockey: Bryan Cooper
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 11lb
- Recent Form: 257-52
- Odds: 40/1
Weakened into seventh in last year’s Grand National for his shrewd Irish trainer. Lightly-raced since the end of 2019, however, and looks sure to have another crack at this high on his agenda. Back form includes second in National Hunt Chase.
22. Top Ville Ben
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Phil Kirby
- Jockey: Tommy Dowson
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 11lb
- Recent Form: PF5312
- Odds: 80/1
Fell over the National fences on second start this season but better efforts when third in Rowland Meyrick and hurdles success in conditions contest at Lingfield. Kept on when runner-up in Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock latest.
23. Enjoy D’Allen
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Ciaran Murphy
- Jockey: Conor Orr
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 11lb
- Recent Form: 23-735
- Odds: 16/1
Keeping on third in the Paddy Power Chase after filling the same spot in the Irish National. Campaigned over hurdles in-between and since those efforts, presumably to protect his mark for a crack at this. Two career chase wins on soft/heavy but Irish Point form on good/yielding. Bought by leading Irish owner JP McManus in February.
24. Anibale Fly
- Age: 12yo
- Trainer: Tony Martin
- Jockey: Luke Dempsey
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 11lb
- Recent Form: 5P3-9098
- Odds: 100/1
Seasoned Aintree campaigner after hitting the frame here in 2018 and 2019. Pulled up in last year’s Grand National but ran a blinder off top weight when third at Punchestown Festival. Shrewd trainer may have laid him out for one last foray to Merseyside.
25. Dingo Dollar
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Sandy Thomson
- Jockey: Ryan Mania
- GN Rating: 148
- Weight: 10st 11lb
- Recent Form: P12-435
- Odds: 40/1
Pulled up in last season’s Grand Sefton over the fences but string of creditable efforts since joining current trainer. Gallant runner-up in the Scottish National on final start of last season. Built on reappearance at Kelso with third in Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle but only fifth in Kelso’s Premier Chase since.
26. Freewheelin Dylan
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Dermot McLoughlin
- Jockey: Ricky Doyle
- GN Rating: 147
- Weight: 10st 10lb
- Recent Form: 1-46UP
- Odds: 50/1
Irish National hero last Easter from the front and has been trained specifically for this ever since. Not completed either of last two starts.
27. Class Conti
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Willie Mullins
- Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies
- GN Rating: 147
- Weight: 10st 10lb
- Recent Form: 340-P90
- Odds: 150/1
Last of 15 to complete in last year’s Grand National. Has run his best races around Gowran Park but only some minor headway into ninth in third crack at Thyestes and further down the field in Leinster National latest.
28. Noble Yeats
- Age: 7yo
- Trainer: Emmet Mullins
- Jockey: Sam Waley-Cohen
- GN Rating: 147
- Weight: 10st 10lb
- Recent Form: 1469P29
- Odds: 66/1
Novice bought by Robert Waley-Cohen after good second in Grade 2 Towton Novices Chase at Wetherby and ninth in the Ultima at Cheltenham latest. This could be too much too soon but one to follow for the future.
29. Mighty Thunder
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Lucinda Russell
- Jockey: Derek Fox
- GN Rating: 147
- Weight: 10st 10lb
- Recent Form: 21-4PP
- Odds: 40/1
Edinburgh and Scottish National winner now represents best of Midlands National form with Time To Get Up not qualified to run here. Not in the same shape since, but trainer has landed Aintree glory before.
30. Cloth Cap
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Jonjo O’Neill
- Jockey: Tom Scudamore
- GN Rating: 147
- Weight: 10st 10lb
- Recent Form: 1P-46R3
- Odds: 28/1
Confirmed frontrunner pulled up as favourite in the Grand National last season. Creditable fourth under huge weight at Cheltenham on reappearance but refusal at Ascot is a concern. Third in Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Chase since and needs to go left-handed. Good ground important.
31. Snow Leopardess
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Charlie Longsdon
- Jockey: Aidan Coleman
- GN Rating: 146
- Weight: 10st 9lb
- Recent Form: 46-111
- Odds: 11/1
Game mare who returned to training after having a foal and has won all three starts this season. Bolted up against her own sex at Exeter latest but was all out to win the Becher over the National fences before that and this is a mile further.
32. Agusta Gold
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Willie Mullins
- Jockey: Danny Mullins
- GN Rating: 146
- Weight: 10st 9lb
- Recent Form: 40-8PP2
- Odds: 100/1
Heavy ground mare an unlucky second in 2020 Irish Grand National Trial. Went one better after a long layoff in reappearance last season but not in same form since. Pulled up in both the Paddy Power Chase and Thyestes, then beaten favourite at Down Royal.
33. Commodore
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Venetia Williams
- Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
- GN Rating: 142
- Weight: 10st 5lb
- Recent Form: 2U9P-1
- Odds: 33/1
Up 9lb for romp when making virtually in Cheltenham Grade 3 on reappearance. Had Thyestes third Mister Fogpatches, subsequent winner Court Master and Santini all well-beaten that day. Yard has had fine season and got a late defection to sneak in off career high mark. Replaces Phoenix Way.
34. Deise Aba
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Philip Hobbs
- Jockey: Tom O’Brien
- GN Rating: 145
- Weight: 10st 8lb
- Recent Form: P-22P2
- Odds: 66/1
Dual winner of the old Gainsborough Chase at Sandown that has three recent narrow defeats including the London National and that race again. Shapes like step up in trip will suit but pulled up in Welsh National and during last year’s Cheltenham Festival.
35. Blaklion
- Age: 13yo
- Trainer: Dan Skelton
- Jockey: Harry Skelton
- GN Rating: 145
- Weight: 10st 8lb
- Recent Form: 6-511P
- Odds: 66/1
Veteran running with renewed vigour after superb sixth in this off same mark last year. Built on encouraging reappearance fifth at Bangor with wins in veterans chase and The Last Fling at Haydock. Good record over these famous fences but may have shown himself too well on winter ground. Pulled in Grand National Trial latest.
36. Poker Party
- Age: 10yo
- Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
- Jockey: Robbie Power
- GN Rating: 145
- Weight: 10st 8lb
- Recent Form: 143/00P
- Odds: 125/1
Not won since head success in 2019 Kerry National off 138. Had problems and missed 666 days of action, so still may be rebuilding fitness with down the field efforts in Paddy Power Chase and over hurdles. Lacked fluency when pulled up on first try over Cross Country at Cheltenham latest.
37. Death Duty
- Age: 11yo
- Trainer: Gordon Elliott
- Jockey: Jordan Gainford
- GN Rating: 144
- Weight: 10st 7lb
- Recent Form: 76-5716
- Odds: 40/1
Snapped four-year losing streak with victory in Irish Grand National Trial at Punchestown. Clearly built on efforts in Paddy Power and Thyestes Chase. Perhaps not the force of old but could be well-handicapped on back form. Only sixth in Ultima at Cheltenham since but drop back in trip was against him.
38. Domaine De L’Isle
- Age: 9yo
- Trainer: Sean Curran
- Jockey: Harry Bannister
- GN Rating: 144
- Weight: 10st 7lb
- Recent Form: 11-P420

- GN Rating: 143
- Weight: 10st 6lb
- Recent Form: 18-F312
- Odds: 14/1
Classic Chase scorer at Warwick after plugging on third behind subsequent Welsh Grand National victor at Chepstow. Ran well under welter burden in Eider Chase at Newcastle and winner of that had scored since. Has a mistake in him, so that could find him out at Aintree.
40. Fortescue
- Age: 8yo
- Trainer: Henry Daly
- Jockey: Hugh Nugent
- GN Rating: 143
- Weight: 10st 6lb
- Recent Form: -37231
- Odds: 28/1
Kept on into third in Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock and needed every yard to win Swinley Chase from Fiddlerontheroof at Ascot latest. Progressive type but jockey can’t claim in Grand National. Last horse in the field.
Complete List of Grand National Runners
We haven’t featured all entries in our above list but just the top 50 or so Grand National runners left in the race. Remember, the maximum field size is 40. That means initial early closing entries of runners for the Grand National are very over-subscribed. From an initial 107 horses entered, there are now 78 left who could still line up at Aintree, although anything below 50 is unlikely to get in. Grand National Runners and Weights
All Grand National runners have a certain weight they must carry. This is allotted to them by the BHA handicapper, who frames a special handicap for the race. Irish horses are often harshly treated by this assessment, so remember that before betting. The Grand National runners and weights are released around Valentine’s Day, so we know then which horse has what weight.
The top weight is always 11st 10lb. In another era, the handicapper could give a horse 12st or even 12st 7lb if that helped to get others into the weight. Any horse carrying less than 10st is what they call out of the handicap, and running off a higher than allotted rating. Grand National runners today are luckier than horses of previous generations, that’s for sure.
In modern times, only a few have carried more than 11st around Aintree to victory. Like any race where ratings determine weight carried, well-handicapped horses often win the contest. You can see what runners and riders for the Grand National this year have got in our detailed list above.
Grand National Runners and Odds
Just like any horse race, there are Grand National odds available to those who want to bet. This is one of the few events in the sport where there is a market all year round. Things really get shaken up when potential Grand National runners are revealed with the release of initial entries towards the end of January or start of February.

It almost goes without saying that this is a very competitive race indeed, so horse racing betting sites should have an ante post market that reflects that. Seeing double figure odds for the field is what to expect. After all, there are 40 runners and many more than that entered. The good thing is if your horse isn’t among Grand National runners, then you may receive your stake back if they are balloted out of the final field.
Key Trials for Runners in the Grand National
You may see tomorrow’s Grand National runners in action throughout the season without even realising it. This is because there are some official and many more unofficial trial races for the world’s most famous steeplechase. Many of this year’s Grand National runners took part in the following 25 races in the UK and Ireland over the course of the previous 13 months.

Past Grand National Winners And Runners Up
The runners and rides for the Grand National may contain past winners or horses placed at the track before. If you want to learn more about previous horse racing results, then you can do so on this very site. It may prove instructive to follow potential Grand National runners this way.
Just because a horse has done well in the big one at Aintree before doesn’t mean they will again. However, past Grand National results can tell us which horses performed over the marathon trip and infamous fences. Knowing that can help you make better informed decisions when betting. Here are recent Grand National winners and runners up for your information:
2022 Grand National

Grand National Runners Tips
There is a knack to finding value among the Grand National runners, because there are so many to choose from. That can be daunting for some novice, inexperienced and casual punters, but serious gamblers have their ways. We asked our experts for some Grand National tips and they were only too happy to oblige.
Over the years, they have found plenty of winners and placed horses that ran well in defeat in the world’s greatest steeplechase. Follow their Grand National runners tips and you may be onto something for the Aintree showpiece. Here are their top three pieces of advice:
Get Non Runner No Bet with Your Grand National Runners
While non runners in the Grand National are a fact of life, there is nothing worse than losing your stake without a run for your money. There is a simple way of eliminating this problem. Place your bets on your fancied Grand National runners with a bookmaker offering a non runner no bet (NRNB) or non runner money back (NRMB) deal. Among those, Betfred are well known for offering this promotion early on the Grand National runners and odds.
Wait Until Grand National Runners and Weights Come Out
A key part of betting on anything is knowing the right time to go in to the market. This is a fine judgment, perhaps built up on instinct and experience, so can be difficult to quantify. However, there is one key point in the ante post Grand National betting where things become clearer. That is halfway through February.
The Grand National runners and weights come out then, just a couple of weeks after the announcement of early closing entries. At this stage, you can start working out which horses you think will definitely get into the race and ones which may sneak in if some higher rated horses don’t turn up at Aintree. Patience could be a virtue as you can make more educated guesses by waiting for the weights.
Bet on Grand National Runners Each Way
If there is one tip our experts swear by then, it is to bet on all of the Grand National horse race runner odds that appeal to you each way. This is not a win only proposition as an event, even if using Grand National free bets on the race. There are 40 horses travelling around two circuits of Aintree, jumping 30 fences all covered in spruce with many obstacles bigger than regulation size for an ordinary steeplechase.
It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to bet on just a win. Wait long enough and bookies will pay extra places on the Grand National runners and prices, perhaps even seventh and eighth. Getting five is the minimum any punter should take. These are the sort of Grand National betting offers you should be looking for. A placed horse can still return plenty of profit, because of the fiercely competitive nature of the race. Each way bets, covering both the win and the places, is the only way to go.
The Last Word on Grand National Runners
With so many runners at the Grand National, anything can and literally does happen. We hope that this guide has been useful and helps you decide on your bets. Knowing who the Grand National runners and riders are is the first port of call before taking a punt.
