Aintree Racecourse Profile & History – Home of the Grand National

Aintree races today

Historians agree that the sport of horse racing in the Liverpool / Merseyside area dates back to Tudor times. During the Eighteenth Century, we know that the sandy beaches of Crosby were used for races. The beginnings of Aintree races today date back to 1829 when the Earl of Sefton agreed to lease land for Flat racing.

It’s not events on the level that this track is synonymous with, however, but the Grand National – the world’s most famous steeplechase. Officially first held in 1839, some sources make the case that when the Liverpool Grand Steeplechase was inaugurated threes year earlier, this was the origin of this unique stamina test. These prototype Grand National races were at Maghull rather than Aintree Racecourse, though.

Officially called the Grand National from 1847, the growth of steam trains and the railways during the Victorian era helped to make this a popular horse racing venue. It has remained that way ever since. Inside of the famous Grand National circuit, the Mildmay course was added in late 1953 so standard steeplechases, and later hurdle races, could be run.

As well as major meetings in early December and April, Aintree Racecourse also has a Sunday card towards the end of October and one on a Saturday in November. There are a couple of Friday nights for summer jumpers in May and June that coincide with York races on the Flat. There are just eight race days a year at this track owned by The Jockey Club, expanding to nine from 2023 with a new Boxing Day card. We’ll look at the big meetings in more detail below.

The Jockey Club Racecourses

Aintree Racecourse is one of The Jockey Club’s 14 tracks in the UK today. You’ll find them all cross England from Cumbria to the Cambridgeshire-Suffolk border, and Merseyside to Devon. Get the lowdown on each course:

Configuration of Aintree Races Today

Whether horses tackle the Mildmay or Grand National courses, they race left-handed. Aintree Racecourse is just outside Liverpool close to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The Mildmay course is sharp with a complete circuit just less than a mile-and-a-half round. Hurdle races have three flights to jump in both the back straight and home straight.

Any steeplechases on the Mildmay course, although over standard fences, are pretty tight with that inside the hurdles track. There are eight jumps in total here with open ditches taken as the second of four in the back straight and the middle of three in the home straight. There is a cross fence on the turn for home four out. The run-in on the Mildmay course is significantly shorter than when horses complete the Grand National circuit.

Grand National Course

A word or two now on the famous fences. There are only five times in the jumps season when the Grand National course is used for races at Aintree today. That is for the Grand Sefton Chase in November, the Becher Chase in December, and on three occasions during the Randox Grand National Festival in April. A complete circuit of Aintree races today is about two-and-a-quarter miles with a run in of almost 500 yards or two-and-a-half furlongs.

There are 16 different fences on the Grand National course at Aintree with 14 of those jumped twice in the track’s feature race. All covered with spruce, after the first two obstacles is an open ditch called Westhead. Following another two jumps is Becher’s Brook and then the Foinavon Fence, one of the smallest on the circuit.

The Canal Turn comes next and horses face a 90 degree change in the course. Valentine’s Brook is the ninth fence on a complete circuit. Three more fences five feet tall, with the middle one being another open ditch, follow. After this are two smaller obstacles including the last on the second circuit, but first time round horses must tackle The Chair next.

This is the biggest obstacle on Aintree Racecourse at five-foot-two. After this is the Water Jump, the 16th, smallest and last fence on the first circuit before horses go round again in the Grand National. Although made safer in recent years, these obstacles remain the acid test of jumping for a National Hunt racehorse.

Key Aintree Racecourse Fixtures

There are four meetings of Aintree races today that contain particularly important events. Kicking off with the Old Roan Chase card in late October, then the Grand Sefton Chase fixture in November and Becher Chase in December, even those the pale in comparison to the three-day Grand National Festival in April.

There are 11 Grade 1 races, plus the Grand National itself, across the cards. Let’s look at each day in turn:
