ALPHA CAPTURE @ 9/4 with VirginBet has only had three career runs but is yet to finish out of the first two. A winner at Carlisle back in August and was only just denied last time at Doncaster over 6 1/2f. He took a bit of a hold that last day so the drop back to 6f here is a good move and the William Haggas yard took this race 12 months ago too.
Bolt Action has won 2 of his 7 races and has only been out of the top three once. Was a winner last time at Salisbury too and before that had been placed in Listed races. The Varian yard won this in 2013 too and from stall 1 he’s another for the shortlist.
Richard Fahey is another stable that’s done well in this race – winning it in 2015 – and their Rousing Encore makes up the trio. This 2 year-old was a fair second to the classy Sakheer, who had been favourite for the Dewhurst this Saturday, last time at Newbury in the Mill Reef. That was a solid run despite going down 3 ½ lengths and if running to that level again it’s hard to not see him having a say too.

PROTAGONIST @ 11/8 with VirginBet can bounce back to winning ways here after running down the field in the Cambridgeshire Handicap last time out. This William Haggas runner had won twice before that at Doncaster and Sandown, while the return to this slightly longer trip will be more up his street.
The King’s horse, Saga, hasn’t really fulfilled its potential, with patchy form. But was still a close second in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this season and looks interesting now upped to 1m2f for the first time.
Godolphin’s Marching Army will draw the eye of punters as he’s the only horse with a recent win – in fact, he’s notched up two from his last runs and 4 from this last 5. Up another 6lbs this time but seems to be a horse that only just does enough in his races, so could still have more to come.

LUCKY MAN (e/w) @ 8/1 with VirginBet gets the verdict in a race with a bundle of chances. This Richard Spencer-trained 3 year-old has the younger legs though on most in the race and that will help. He’s a proven CD winner too and was a close fourth in the Ayr Gold Cup (watch below) last time out. He escapes a rise in the handicap for that run too and before that effort had run two solid races at York (2nd and 1st). In fact, his overall record at York is very good 2-2-1 and jockey PJ McDonald, who was riding last time, remains in the saddle.
Gulliver is a 2-time winner of the race and is back for more for the David O’Meara team who have won 50% of the last 6 runnings. Another yard that has done well in the race is the Kevin Ryan team – he runs Gis A Sub, Bergerac and Bielsa and it’s the last-named that is of interest. Well drawn in 9 as 7 of the last 8 winners have come from a single-figure berth, and it’s interesting that the blinkers are on for the first time. He’s also down 2lbs from his 14th in the Ayr Gold Cup and is now a pound lower than when last winning.
Dakota Gold is another familiar face in these big-field sprint handicaps and despite his advancing years can go well too. A winner here at York in May off only 2lb lower and even though his form has been a bit patchy this term has been 1st or 2nd in three of his seven races. The Dods yard also has history in this race – winning it in back-to-back seasons in 2013 and 2014.
