Which Trainers Have the Best Scottish Grand National Records

The all-time leading Scottish Grand National-winning trainer is shared between Neville Crump and Ken Oliver.

This duo racked up 5 wins each between 1949 and 1983 – however, both are, of course, no longer training.

So, what about the current trainers and the yards that will have Scottish Grand National runners this year?

Paul Nicholls Has Won the Scottish Grand National Three Times

The 13-time British jumps champion trainer Paul Nicholls has one of the best Scottish Grand National records in recent times.

The Dicheat handler has mopped up three wins in the famous Ayr race, with the first coming back in 1997 with the AP McCoy ridden Belmont King.

Nicholls then had to wait until 2016 for his next win in the race when the Trevor Hemmings-owned Vicente won for jockey Sam Twiston-Davies. The pair then followed-up in the next year (2017) to join only a handful of ‘back-to-back’ Scottish Grand National winners (watch below).

This year in 2023, Paul Nicholls will be looking to move one step closer to Oliver and Crump as he saddles two runners – Threeunderthrufive and Flash Collonges.

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies Has a Good Scottish Grand National Record Too

Another yard that are still in operation that have won the Scottish Grand National three times is Nigel Twiston-Davies.

The Nauton-based trainer last won the race in 2009 with the 11 year-old Hello Bud defying his age (Watch below).

NTD also won the prize back in 1994 with Earth Summit, who famously went onto win the Aintree Grand National four years later and in 1992 with Captain Dibble – ridden by Peter Scudamore.

This year Nigel Twiston-Davies will be pinning his hopes on a fourth win in the race on Undersupervision, who will be ridden by two-time winner of the race – son Sam Twiston-Davies.

Last Year’s Winning Trainer Has a Strong Hand Again

The Welsh trainer Christian Williams is making a name for himself in ‘National-type races’ and he managed to break his duck in the Scottish version 12 months ago with Win My Wings (watch below).

He’s back for more in 2023 with Kitty’s Light, who was actually runner-up in 2022 too, plus he’s also got his 10 year-old Cap Du Nord flying his flag.

Can Lucinda Russell Pull Off a Famous ‘National Double’ Inside a Week?

Last weekend we witnessed the Lucinda Russell camp winning their second Aintree Grand National, when Corach Rambler powered home for jockey Derek Fox. And Russell is eyeing a famous ‘National Double’ this Saturday in Scotland.

She won the race in 2021 with Mighty Thunder, who runs again and is now rated 19lbs lower, plus he also has the 7 year-old Your Own Story entered.

If Russell can win the Scottish Grand National, she will join Ginger McCain as the only other handler to win both races in the same season – he managed it with a certain Red Rum in 1974.

Rebecca Curtis Won the Scottish National In 2018

The final trainer that has winning Scottish Grand National form to her name – with a runner on Saturday – is Rebecca Curtis.

She took the race in 2018 when Joe Farrell won at 33/1 for jockey Adam Wedge (watch below) and will be trying to add to that success with Ruthless Article.
