With it being transfer deadline day, the January window is almost up, and we’re taking a look at the Premier League‘s most expensive signings in January.

There’s no surprise that Chelsea feature more than once on this list, with them holding the record for the most expensive January signing ever in England’s top flight. They recently signed Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for around £89 million.

Chelsea are also rumoured to have bid over £100 million for Benfica’s World Cup winning star Enzo Fernandez, which would smash the record. That would take Todd Boehly and Chelsea’s spending to £300 million plus, which is a huge amount of money.

Top 10 Most Expensive January Signings

Rank Clubs, Fee, Year Player
1 Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea (£89m, 2023) Mykhailo Mudryk
2 Southampton to Liverpool (£75m, 2018) Virgil van Dijk
3 Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea (£58m, 2019) Christian Pulisic
4 Athletic Bilbao to Manchester City (£57m, 2018) Aymeric Laporte
5 Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal (56m, 2018) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
6 Liverpool to Chelsea (2011, £50m) Fernando Torres
7 Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United (£47m, 2020) Bruno Fernandes
8 Everton to Newcastle (£40m) Anthony Gordon
9 Porto to Liverpool (£37.5m, 2022) Luis Diaz
10 Chelsea to Manchester United (£37.1m, 2014) Juan Mata

Not all of them went on to have the best times at their new club’s though…

Fernando Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in a big-money move back in 2011, only scoring 20 goals in 110 games over four years at the club. However, he did have one particularly good moment in a Chelsea shirt, when he scored a last-minute goal in a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, sending the Blues through to the final, which they eventually won.
