Thyestes Chase 2024: Willie Mullins Looking For Win Number Ten

The Thyestes Chase is named after a racehorse of the same name that ran in the 1930’s, who strangely raced over sprinting trips, only won twice and was given his title based on the figure from Greek mythology.

Anyway, enough of the Thyestes Chase origin and onto the big history-maker in the race – Willie Mullins – as the Closutton handler has a record second-to-none in this Gowran Park contest.

Mullins has mopped up the prize nine times over the years, including last year with Carefully Selected (watch below). On His Own landed the race twice between 2012 and 2014, while Hedgehunter won the Thyestes in 2004 – the year before he went onto take the Aintree Grand National.

The only other horse to win both races (not in the same season) was Numbersixvalverde, who won the Thyestes in 2005 and the National the following season (2006).

Looking at the 2024 renewal, Willie Mullins has three Thyestes Chase runners with Bronn, Ontheropes and Glengouly, who their main jockey Paul Townend has picked to ride.

Therefore it’s no shock to see this former course winner prominent in the market with the best UK horse racing betting sites and should be spot-on for this after a second at Limerick last month after a 285-day break.

The Mullins horses are also in fine fettle at the moment – operating at a 40% SR in the last 14 days (16-40) at the time of writing.

Kim Muir Winner Angels Dawn Heads The Thyestes Chase Betting 2024

Veteran Irish jumps jockey Phillip Enright won the Thyestes Chase in 2008 and 2009 on a horse called Priests Leap and he’s got a top chance of adding to those successes with Angels Dawn.

Last season’s Cheltenham Festival Kim Muir winner is propping up the betting with most of the best online gambling sites, but this popular mare will need to bounce back from an average run over hurdles last time at Navan.

The return to fences is expected to suit, but she is also rated 7lbs higher than her Cheltenham win last term.

Gordon Elliott Has A Third Of The Thyestes Chase Runners

Trainer Gordon Elliott’s horses are ticking over nicely at the moment and he’s building up a nice profile in the Thyestes Chase – having sent out the 2018 and 2021 winners.

The County Meath handler seems to want to add to those wins in 2024 as he’s got a massive SIX of the 18 Thyestes Chase runners – Dunboyne, Fakir D’alene, Gevrey, Frontal Assault, Diol Ker and Royal Thief.

Oh, and he’s even got the reserve in Where It Began, should there be a non-runner.

In-form jockey Jack Kennedy has ridden both Elliott’s previous winner in the Thyestes and he’s decided to get the leg-up on Dunboyne.

Last Year’s Runner-up Dunboyne Looking To Go One Better

Dunboyne also has Thyestes Chase history – having been runner-up in the race 12 months ago. The 9 year-old went down fighting by a neck to Carefully Selected last year and is back on just a 5lb higher mark.

He’s since run fourth in the Kim Muir at the Festival, so has a bit of ground (13 1/2 lengths) to find with Angels Dawn and despite being pulled up in the Grand National, returned this season with a fine fourth at Navan in the Troytown Chase to another past winner of this race Coko Beach.

2022 Thyestes Chase Winner Longhouse Poet Back For More

Longhouse Poet pulled off a monster gamble to win the Thyestes Chase in 2022 – being backed from 25/1 into 5/1 and rewarding his backers.

This Martin Brassil runner backed that up that season with a gallant sixth in the Grand National, but unseated in last year’s Aintree race at the 8th fence.

However, two poor return runs this season at Punchestown and Tramore suggest he’s on a recovery mission here.

Thyestes Chase Billed As A Grand National Trial

The Thyestes Chase is a race that we often see winners or runners go onto run in that season’s Grand National.

However, we are yet to see a winner take both races in the same season.

The closest we’ve come is with Hedgehunter and Numbersixvalverde, who both won the Thyestes Chase and then added the National the follow season.

Last year’s winner Carefully Selected, went onto run 14th in the National.

We could also see Any Second Now in Thursday’s race – he was runner-up in the 2022 National and also finished third in 2021.
