Gold Tweet, who landed the Cleeve Hurdle on Trials Day, will be supplemented for the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival – according to his French trainer Gabriel Leenders.

Gold Tweet On Course To Back Up Cleeve Hurdle Win At Cheltenham Festival

Gold Tweet came over to Prestbury Park at the end of January to win the Cleeve Hurdle on Trials Day – and became the first French Graded winner at Cheltenham for 18 years.

However, with the Cleeve Hurdle an obvious steppingstone for runners that head to the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, connections faced a dilemma as Gold Tweet didn’t hold an entry for the Thursday showcase race.

But, having had just under two weeks to consider the options and having seen how the horse has come out of that race, his trainer Gabriel Leenders has confirmed that they will supplement Gold Tweet, a horse he also owns a 25% share in, for the Stayers’ Hurdle on Thursday 16th March.

Connections To Pay Just Under £15,000 To Supplement Gold Tweet for Stayers’ Hurdle

The cost to get Gold Tweet into the race will be just under £15,000 but having picked up £39,466 for winning the Cleeve Hurdle and also having the carrot of a top prize of £182,877.50 in the Stayers’ Hurdle, then you feel connections have made the right choice.

Leenders told the Racing Post: “When you are lucky enough to have a horse that is among the favourites for a race at the Cheltenham Festival, you’ll do everything you can to go, which in this case means we will supplement him. He only lost four kilos, which is nothing considering he had the travel and race. He has taken the whole trip very well.”

“The idea is to go for the Stayers’ Hurdle and then see how he comes out of that,” said Leenders. “We could continue with that adventure and go for the three-mile hurdle race at Aintree”

Teahupoo Remains The 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle Favourite

With the news of Gold Tweet now being supplemented BetUK has the French horse on offer @ 8/1, with the Gordon Elliott-trained Teahupoo still heading the Cheltenham odds for the race @ 5/2 with BetUK and if getting to the race in one piece, looks set to go off as the 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle favourite.

The winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle for the last two seasons – Flooring Porter – is on offer @ 5/1, but still isn’t a certain runner after getting injured earlier in the season.

Cleeve Hurdle a Decent Trial For Stayers’ Hurdle

We’ve seen 14 of the last 17 Cleeve Hurdle winners run in the Stayers’ Hurdle, with 12 of those going onto finish in the top 4 and five horses do the double – the last horse to win both races in the same season was Paisley Park in 2019.

Baracouda Was The Last French-Trained Winner Of The Stayers’ Hurdle

The older racegoers out there will remember another big French name that dominated the Stayers’ Hurdle division back in the early 2000’s. Baracouda, who was ridden by the controversial Thierry Doumen, won the race back-to-back in 2002 and 2003, plus only just failed to land the three-timer when second in 2004 to Iris’s Gift.
