This month could be one of the Steel City’s iciest in history, as Sheffield’s coldest weather on record betting odds show.

Sheffield has been hit by a particularly chilly January this year. Residents in the South Yorkshire city have spent most of 2024 so far wrapped up to shelter from the cold.

Average temperatures in Sheffield for January hover between 2-5°C, but sometimes drop significantly lower. It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen a record-low temperature in the city, though.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city of Sheffield was at Weston Park, almost 130 years ago. In 1895, the record low of -14.6°C was measured in February.

In the final week of January this year, the weather is set to be far more pleasant. Sheffield can expect highs of 12°C on Thursday 25 January, with lows of 3°C overnight on Friday 26

But with such Arctic conditions in the early parts of the month, a cold weather record could still be broken.

With that in mind, we at SportsLens have looked at the latest betting odds for Sheffield’s coldest weather on record.

Sheffield Coldest Weather On Record Betting Odds

Coldest January since records began: 5/1
Coldest Year since records began: 16/1

Sheffield’s coldest temperature so far this month was -3°C, recorded overnight on 17 January.

At 5/1, the latest cold weather betting odds show we could still see the coldest January ever recorded in Sheffield.

A much more unlikely record to break is the coldest year ever in the city. While 2024 may only be a month in, odds of 16/1 suggest a new record is an outside bet.

As average temperatures are rising around the world each year, cold weather records are less easy to break in the UK.

That doesn’t make it impossible, though. And if you’ve been experiencing the wintery conditions in Yorkshire over the past month, you might well disagree with those odds.

The Met Office has predicted Sheffield should be milder for the rest of January, however. Their forecast has sunshine in spells over the weekend, followed by a grey and cloudy few days to close out the month.

February appears more wet, with showers and drizzle forecast throughout the first week.
