U.K. Weather Odds 2024: January Set To Break Records

The opening weeks of January 2024 have brought some severe weather conditions across the United Kingdom, as snowfall descends on various parts of the country.

On Tuesday 15th January, the lowest temperature of the month was recorded in Dalwhinnie, Scotland, as it dropped to -14 degrees in the Scottish Highlands.

Wednesday 16th January brought more weather warnings, as temperatures plummeted across the U.K. – registering at – 11.1 degrees in Shap, England and – 9.4 degrees in Sennybridge, Wales.

Hundreds of schools in Scotland have been forced to close due to the severe weather warnings and the Arctic wind is set to continue.

None of these temperatures have broken the record for the coldest recorded in January 2010, which stands at -22.3 degrees in the Scottish Highlands hamlet.

January 2010 also holds the record for the coldest opening month in UK history, averaging a temperature of 2.2 degrees across the nation.

U.K. citizens have been warned over the possible temperature drop this month and picking January 2024 to break the record from 2010 is an interesting choice at 5/1.

Bookmakers have also offered the possibility of 2024 being the coldest year in British history, due to the freezing start.

Since 1990, the coldest year in the UK (on average) came in 2010, where the average temperature across 365 days was 7.94 degrees.

Selecting this year to be the coldest since records began seems a long shot, as in the last few years temperatures in the summer have risen – reaching 40 degrees in Lincolnshire (2022).

The issue of global warming continues to see the heat across the globe increase, which is highlighted by the bookies pricing the option of 2024 being the hottest year in U.K. history at 16/1.
