Royal Ascot Results For Tuesday 20th June 2023: Ryan Moore Fires In Day One Treble
It was Ryan Moore three, the other jockeys one each, after the 9-time top rider at the meeting took his overall Royal Ascot tally to 76.
Moore is also now just one Royal Ascot winner away from Frankie Dettori’s haul of 77 wins as the pocket Italian drew a day one blank on what is his final season riding.
The three Royal Ascot winners for Ryan Moore came on River Tiber (1st 11/8) in the Coventry Stakes as he provided trainer Aidan O’Brien his tenth win in this juvenile Group 2.
Paddington (1st 11/5) landed the marmalade in one of the day’s feature’s – the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at 4:20pm to give Moore his second winner on the day, which was also O’Brien’s nineth success in this contest. The win saw this season’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Paddington beat the English Guineas hero Chaldean by an easy 3 3/4 lengths to win the battle of the Guineas Classics.
The two wins for Aidan O’Brien also saw him overtake Sir Michael Stoute as the all-time winning most trainer at Royal Ascot with 83 winners (and counting).
Ryan Moore rounded off a top first day when powering home on the Willie Mullins-trained Vauban (1st Evs) in the final race – the Copper Horse Handicap. The win from the 2021 Cheltenham Festival Triumph Hurdle winner gave Mullins his nineth Royal Ascot win.
Owner Shiekh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum Lands 577/1 Royal Ascot Double
On the day, it was also all-smiles for owner Shiekh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum as his famous yellow and black dot silks were in the winners’ enclosure twice, with Royal Champion (16/1), who won the Wolferton Stakes and earlier with Queen Anne Stakes winner Triple Time – the shock 33/1 winner of the opener. Landing a monster 577/1 Royal Ascot double.
Hollie Doyle Survives Stewards’ Enquiry To Land King’s Stand Stakes
Hollie Doyle was also on the day one Royal Ascot scoresheet as the popular rider sent home last year’s Coventry Stkes winner Bradsell (1st 14/1) to win the King’s Stand Stakes – the big Group One sprint on the day.
However, the horse has to survive a Stewards’ Enquiry after drifting over to cause slight interference with the favourite Highfield Princess, but it wasn’t deemed enough to alter the result. The horse was also only supplemeted for the race last week, so it was a move that paid off for his Victorious Racing connections.
Doyle also created history by becoming the first lady rider to win a Group One race at Royal Ascot.
Overall, it was a mixed bag of results in terms of the bookie vs punter battle with two big favourites winning, but with 33/1, 16/1 and 14/1 winners too – it was probably honours shared, just!
