Steven Gerrard has been tipped to return to Ibrox as Rangers boss if Michael Beale leaves the club in the wake of a disappointing first season at the helm, according to exclusive odds compiled by SportsLens.

Champions League and Europa League winner Rafa Benitez is also in contention for the role, having been out of work since leaving Everton in January last year.

Liverpool legend Gerrard won 125 of his 193 matches in charge of Rangers, leading them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before departing to manage Aston Villa six months later.

Speculation regarding Beale’s future at the Glasgow giants has ramped up in the wake of a trophyless season which has seen rivals Celtic sweep the board.

  • Steven Gerrard favourite to become next Rangers manager at 3/1
  • Premier League icons John Terry and Patrick Vieira in the running at 16/1 and 18/1 respectively
  • Michael Beale’s Ibrox contract runs until 2026 but pressure is mounting
  • Rangers finished seven points behind champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership

Beale is expected to continue in the role for the time being, with his sights set on qualification for next season’s Champions League via the third qualifying round which takes place in August.

This summer will see plenty on transfer activity surrounding Rangers as attackers Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are set to leave the Glasgow giants on free transfers.

Steven Gerrard 3/1 favourite to succeed Michael Beale at Rangers

England international goalkeeper Jack Butland is expected to arrive from Crystal Palace, while a £7m bid has reportedly been lodged for Antalyaspor striker Haji Wright.

Should Rangers fail to qualify for the Champions League proper, the chance of Beale being shown the door at Ibrox could increase exponentially.

Another former Rangers player Kevin Muscat is second in the running to replace the current boss, with former Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez next up at 8/1.

Ibrox hero Gennaro Gattuso follows at 9/1 ahead of Jesse Marsch, who was sacked by Leeds in February, with the American available at 12/1.

SportsLens Head of News Lee Astley commented: “Steven Gerrard heads the field of contenders for the Rangers managerial role should Michael Beale’s tenure come to a premature conclusion.

“The Liverpool legend burned no bridges when he quit Ibrox to take the Aston Villa job and the majority of Gers fans would surely welcome him back with open arms.

“There’s little doubt that Gerrard’s CV pales in comparison to that of serial trophy winner Rafa Benitez however. Whether Rangers could afford the huge salary that the Spaniard would likely command is another matter.

“Further down the list, Graham Potter (33/1) could be an interesting outside chance as he looks to get back into the game following his failed spell in charge of Chelsea.”
