The market has proved very accurate on Southwell’s Tapeta surface this winter and simply backing all SP Favourites since December 1st would found 56 winners from 151 bets (37.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £9.60 to a £1 level stake at SP. Plenty of those were heavily backed – they would have returned a profit of £68.84 by taking the best early price the evening before racing. In the 19 meetings since the beginning of December, we’ve had at least one winning favourite (or joint/co favourite) and we’ve had at least three winning jollies on 12 occasions. Charles Hill is flying at present and his MIDNIGHTATTHEOASIS – the even-money favourite for the 6f restricted maiden at 2.45 – is going to take some beating. Hills has had nine SP favourites at this venue since they replaced the Fibresand with Tapeta, recording form figures of 111111121 (8-9) for a profit of £12.78 to a £1 level stake at SP. The only horses beaten – Harry Magnus – was trapped out wide from his poor high draw and proved that form all wrong when scoring at Kempton next time. It’s tempting just to back him at the 5-6 available with Spreadex but a buy of SOUTHWELL FAVOURITES is the way I’m playing it, as I’m also keen on INFINITIVE (15-8) in the opener and USTATH (6-5) in the finale.

NEWCASTLE 4.00
PERCY WILLIS looked unlucky when fourth at Wolverhampton on Monday, meeting with interference when coming with his run. By the time he got going again the race was all but over and he could only stay on into fourth place, a length and three-quarters behind the winner. He usually goes well at this time of year, scoring twice on Tapeta last January (this evening’s course and distance/Southwell) and his patient style is ideal for this track. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
