BRIDGE NORTH looks a solid play at the head of the betting in this Pertemps Qualifier, as he’s going to come on a bundle for his Aintree comeback effort in late October when fifth of 11 on unsuitably fast going. He improved after wind surgery last season, scoring in the mud at Bangor before a respectable 80-1 fifth of 14 in Grade 1 company over three miles at Aintree. The step back up from two and a half miles will suit and the Henry Daly yard remains in fine form.

Trainer Jane Williams is flying after a slow start to the season and, in the past fortnight, had we backed her horses who’d had the benefit of a recent outing (1-42 days ago) we’d have found five winners from 12 bets for a profit of £22.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. HONNEUR D’ANJONC has a mountain to climb on official ratings if he’s to make an impact in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown today but his poor recent form can be attributed to lack of peak fitness and a possible dislike of left-handed tracks. His last six runs right-handed have returned form figures of 121211 (4-6) and he rates a buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market.

Those carrying 11 stone or more have provided just one winner from 69 runners in the 12 renewals of the Becher Chase since 2010 and applying this stat eliminates no less than 17 of the 23 declared runners. The two most interesting ones who fall into the low-weight bracket are PERCUSSSION, who stayed on well to grab a 40-1 third over these fences in the Grand Sefton last month when racing from out of the handicap proper, and DOMAINE DE L’ISLE, fourth at 66-1 in this race last year. Both have been nibbled at in the overnight betting but rather than back the pair I’m going to buy ‘DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER’ with Spreadex as we’ll also have the other low weights – FIVE STAR GETAWAY, NOW WHERE OR WHEN, DIDERO VALLIS and MINELLA BOBO – running for us and that quartet have also attracted early support.
