RISHI SUNAK, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next UK Prime Minister with Liz Truss under heavy pressure as her leadership skills are called into question.

Things are looking rocky for Truss, whose cabinet is falling apart after a disastrous mini-budget which caused to Pound to slump and resulted in her sacking Kwasi Kwarteng just 38 days after appointing him as Chancellor.

With the Tories in full meltdown it comes as little surprise that rumours of a change of leadership are rampant within the media once more. Reports that Boris Johnson could even find himself back in 10 Downing Street might sound strange but in UK politics nothing is weirder than the truth.

The odds on Bojo returning for a second spell as PM have shortened from 20/1 to as little as 11/1 since the morning of Tuesday 18th October. What crazy times we’re living in.

Rishi Sunak

Sunak lost out to Truss in September’s leadership race as his 60,399 votes from Conservative party members proved almost 21,000 less than that of his rival. Sunak warned Truss that her policy of tax cuts appeared unsustainable and so it has proved.

The Winchester College educated Tory has an estimated personal wealth of £200m and now looks set to take charge of the country, with his odds now as short as 11/8.

Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt had been seen as a potential replacement for the embattled Ms Truss but he appears to have removed himself from the running. Mr Hunt said he denied he had ambitions for the top job, saying he, his wife and his children had ruled it out.

Mr Wallace told The Times: “The public wants stability and security and if the Government fails to deliver that then they will send us into opposition.” Mr Hunt has said he believes Ms Truss will still be Prime Minister at Christmas, despite growing calls for her to go.

Penny Mordaunt

Penny Mordaunt backed Truss in six weeks ago after she was eliminated from the leadership race but she could be an interesting outside chance this time around. She delivered a masterful performance in the house of commons this week as Truss hid from view.

There has not been a coup, she told one Labour MP. She is not “hiding under a desk”, she told another. Then where is she? Taking care of some “very serious matters”, Ms Mordaunt insisted. Perhaps Mordaunt is now ready to step up to take the big job.

Keir Starmer

Labour leader Keir Starmer is cashing on the Tories shambolic state with regular digs at Ms Truss and co. “I guess under this Tory government, everybody gets to be prime minister for 15 minutes,” he mockingly said after Mordaunt answered a question on Truss’ behalf on Monday.

Clearly Starmer’s chances of becoming the next PM rely on Truss making it to the end of her tenure, which seems unlikely given that the next General Election is not due until January 2025.

Ben Wallace

Defence secretary Ben Wallace had ruled himself out as candidate for next Tory leader but seemed to have had change of heart at the Conservative party conference. He was a surprise absentee from the leadership race in July but Wallace is now being touted as a replacement for Liz Truss.

The 52-year-old, a staunch remainer who is a favourite among many Tory members, ruled himself out of this summer’s contest on personal grounds. But when asked at the Conservative party conference this month if he would consider running for leader, he said: “I don’t rule it out.”
