Mikel Arteta revealed why he chose the former Chelsea midfielder and explained what “quality” the player can bring to his side.

Following the unsuccessful transfer of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, which fell through despite the Ecuadorian posting his desires to join the Gunners on social media. Arsenal had to look elsewhere for a midfield reinforcement and signed Jorginho from Premier League rivals Chelsea for £12m.

Following Mohamed Elneny’s injury, Arsenal were in urgent need of a holding midfielder as Albert Sambi Lokonga left for Crystal Palace on loan. Had the Egyptian avoided injury the club wouldn’t have required the “Plan B” option.

Arteta said: “And, obviously, the injury of Mo, the significant injury of Mo had to have a plan B behind him that probably wasn’t the case before that injury happened. And we have adapted and we have improved the squad.”

The decision came under scrutiny as the Italian fell out of favour at Chelsea, however Arteta believes the midfielder can have a huge impact on his Arsenal side.

The Spaniard said: “His intelligence, his personality, his leadership and skill and the way he understands our way of playing and the qualities he has to implement that in football matches.”

The Champions League winner has started to train with his new teammates and is set to feature in Arsenal’s next fixture when they travel to Goodison Park on Saturday.
