Recent Manchester United transfer news has been saturated with their pursuit of goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose switch from Inter Milan is nearing completion. However, with a slew of midfield departures expected before the window closes, the club are eyeing an overhaul in the middle of the park.

Just this morning it has been reported that Manchester United are willing to listen to offers for Scott McTominay, while the club have already rejected a bid for fellow midfielder Fred, who is widely expected to depart this summer should a suitable offer be tabled.

Add to that failed signing Donny Van De Beek and Anthony Elanga, and the Red Devils will hope to have raised a significant amount of money from outgoings in order to fund Erik Ten Hag’s vision for the future.

Completing a goalkeeping overhaul is all but finalised as the Onana saga nears its end, and although adding an established number nine was also at the top of their summer shopping list, the host of exits in midfield will more than likely force them into the market.

Moroccan World Cup hero Sofyan Amrabat, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch have all been sounded out as potential targets.

However, an unexpected market opportunity appears to have presented itself at just the right time, according to Sky Germany. Leon Goretzka, who has been a mainstay in Bayern Munich’s midfield since 2018, could be available for as little as £34m this window.

Manager Thomas Tuchel admitted he can not guarantee the 28-year-old’s starting spot next year, while the hierarchy have Showa willingness to sell him this summer if their valuation (between £34m and £42m) is met.

The German endured a tough end to the season, where he featured sporadically in Bayern’s crucial title run-in – he completed the full 90 minutes in just two of his final 11 Bundesliga appearances.

Goretzka has long been a target of previous managers at Old Trafford, firstly during his Schalke playing days and then latterly in 2021, where concrete interest from United failed to materialise.
