Bayern Munich travel to Rome to take on Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday, where they’ll be aiming to bounce back after suffering defeat to Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend.
Thomas Tuchel’s side fell to a 3-0 defeat at the BayArena, dealing a major blow to their Bundesliga title hopes as Xabi Alonso’s men moved five points clear at the top of the table.
Prior to that loss, Bayern had won three German top flight matches in succession, and booked their place in the last-16 of the Champions League by finishing top of their group with an almost perfect record.
With five wins and a draw, the Bavarians finished eight points clear at the top of Group A – ahead of Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Manchester United, meanwhile Lazio finished second in their group – four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.
I Biancocelesti have been in fairly poor form in recent weeks having failed to win three of their last four matches across all competitions, however they bounced back at the weekend with a 3-1 Serie A victory over Bologna.
Lazio last met Bayern at this exact stage of the Champions League in 2020/21, where the German side recorded 4-1 and 2-1 victories to book their place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 aggregate triumph. Although we don’t anticipate such a dominant win for Die Roten this time around, we still expect that they’ll advance to the next round of the competition fairly comfortably.
