Lay Of The Day Tip For Horse Racing: Thursday 25th January 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Thursday come from Huntingdon, Wetherby, Newcastle (AW) and Southwell (AW).

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM, where you can get a £40 free bet below – you choose!

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Thursday: 3:45pm Huntingdon– WHITE RHINO

The Oliver Greenhall and Josh Guerriero runner WHITE RHINO has certainly improved again this season – starting the campaign on a mark of 109 and is now rated 129.

While if we go back to this time last year, the horse was rated just 74, so in 12 months he’s gone up a massive 55lbs.

He impressed again to win at Cheltenham last month, which was his fifth win from his last seven outings, but is up another 6lbs and is racing in a similar race that also includes some well-known old faces – past race winner Itchy Feet and Chantry House.

Yes, there is every chance this 8 year-old could kick-on again, but you feel there has to be a ceiling reached at some point with the way he’s risen up the ratings over the last year.

The Form Of White Rhino’s Cheltenham Win Looks Suspect

The other niggle, for me, is the form of that Cheltenham race he won last month. The horse he beat by 2 1/2 lengths into second Bold Endeavour was a well-beaten 6th at Lingfield last Sunday (22 lengths), while the third Hermino AA was 15th (of 19) and beaten 36 lengths in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton a few weeks back.

Add in the 6th Paricolor running second at Fontwell next time and the 7th Fontana Ellissi only 5th (of 10) at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, then you can certainly make a case for the form of White Rhino’s win last time looking suspect.

This coupled with a further 6lb hike in the ratings, mean I’ll be looking elsewhere for the winner.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
