Andy Newton continues with his Lay Of The Day tips on Saturday 20th January 2024, where he’s got one horse to take on at Wolverhampton.

Lay Of The Day Tip: Saturday 20th January 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Saturday come from Lingfield and Wolverhampton on the AW, with Ascot, Taunton and Haydock off due to frozen tracks.

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM, where you can get a £40 free bet below – you choose!

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Tip: 8:00pm Wolverhampton – NOBLE CAPTAIN

Hopefully Saturday will be the final day of the really cold weather which has led to a lot of jumps card being called off.

Lingfield and Wolverhampton are flying the flag for horse racing fans, with the ITV cameras heading to Lingers to take in five races.

However, I’m going to head to Wolverhampton and their evening card with a horse that’s running in the 8pm that looks worth taking on – hopefully it’ll be worth the wait.

NOBLE CAPTAIN is the one to focus on, who runs for the Katie Scott yard in a 6f Class 6 Classified Stakes race. This 4 year-old broke his duck at the 13th time of asking at Newcastle earlier this month, but only scrambled home by a nose. He’s in a similar race here but has to carry a lot more in racing weight (9-10) as opposed to just 8-11 last time.

The other negative is the return to Wolves – he’s raced here four times in the past and is 4-2-9-4, so been out of the frame 75% of the time.

Finally, the track stats of the Katie Scott team hardly leap off the page. They’ve had just two winners at Lingfield from their last 61 and are only 2-from-47 (4%) with their 4+ year-olds.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
