Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 1:25 Haydock – COLLECTORS ITEM
This Jonjo O’Neill runner will be popular having stayed on well over 3m last time at Sandown, with the step up to 3m 4 1/2f, therefore, an obvious plus on paper for Collectors Item.
However, this 6 year-old still didn’t jump the best that day and is also still to win a race over fences from three tries. The ground will be a lot softer here too (heavy), so even though the longer trip looks worth a crack it’s still an unknown. A one-pound drop in the ratings helps but this also represents a step up in class from last time.
It’s also a race that we’ll have five others running for us and they all seem to have a squeak. These include East Street and Fantastikas, who were both fine seconds last time out, and also the Robyndzone, who comes from the in-form Venetia Williams yard that have won this race twice in the past.
It’s also interesting that three of the last five runnings of this Haydock Last Fling Chase have been ridden by a claiming jockey – maybe not surprising in what is often desperate ground and over a gruelling trip. The three that tick this stat this year are Robyndzone, Fortescue and Fantastikas, who will all be ridden by jockeys getting a weight allowance.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.
If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
