2022 King George Chase Trends for Kempton Race
Use our key King George Trends to find the best winning profile of past winners. Apply these stats to the Boxing Day Kempton runners to see which horses have the best chance of winning based on history.
90% Of the Last 20 King George VI Winners Raced In The Last 5 Weeks
A must-have King George Chase trend to have in your corner is to look for horses that ran within the last five weeks. This equates to 35 days, but with these ‘days stats’ it’s always best to give a bit of grace either side, so we are looking for horses that last raced 40 or less days ago.
Most tick this trend, but it’s worth noting that the likely 2022 King George favourite, Bravemansgame doesn’t – he was last in action 58 days ago when winning the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Oct 29th.
Grade One Winning Form Is a Big Plus
With 17 of the last 20 King George Chase winners proven Grade one heroes, then this is another stat to look out for. Last year’s winner, Tornado Flyer kicked this trend into touch but with an 85% return it’s still a very strong stat.
Of the main players, those that are yet to win a Grade One chase are – Hitman, Eldorado Allen and Royale Pagaille.
Do Past King George VI Winners Have a Good Record?
In short, yes, they do. In the last 20 runnings of the King George Chase a massive 8 (40%) have been won by a past hero of the race. Kicking King, Kauto Star (4 times), Long Run, Silviniaco Conti and Clan des Obeaux were the horses in question.
This year, we’ve not got the current King George Chase winner in Tornado Flyer, but we do have the 2020 winner Frodon, who will be looking to win back his King George Chase crown. The last horse to do just that was Long Run, who won the race in 2010 and again in 2012.

How Has the King George Chase Favourite Fared?
Considering the King George Chase is a big Christmas contest it’s actually been a punters dream race and a bookies nightmare in recent years.
Okay, the layers got one back in 2020 and also 12 months ago when Tornado Flyer (28/1) and Frodon (20/1) won the King George Chase, but in the last 20 runnings we’ve still had a massive 11 King George winning favourites. During that time, we’ve also had 80% of market leaders placed (top three finish), while 75% of the last 20 winners returned 9/2 or shorter in the betting.
The last winning King George Chase favourite was Might Bite in 2017 and the 2022 likely market leader will be Bravemansgame.
Winning Form Over Fences at Kempton a Positive
Course form in most horses races is often a big plus and that applies to the King George Chase too. Since 2002, we’ve seen 12 King George winners that had previously won a race over fences at Kempton Park.
Looking at the King George Chase class of 2022, Bravemansgame, Frodon, Millers Bank and Royal Pagaille and are the ones with proven winning form at the Sunbury-on-Thames track.
Look For King George Chase Runners Aged 8 or Younger
Next up is to look at the age of your King George Chase fancy. Why? Well, in recent runnings we’ve seen 16 of the last 20 winners aged 8 or younger (80%), while since 2014 (8 runnings) we’ve had five winners aged 8.
Since 2002, only Cue Card (9) Edredon Bleu (11) and the mighty Kauto Star (9 & 11) have won the King George Chase as horses aged 9 or older.
Applying that age stat to the 2022 King George runners will see Frodon (10) as the only horse older than 8.
The Betfair Chase Is Often a Good Trial
Looking back at the Betfair Chase, which is run at Haydock in November, is often a help too. The 2022 running was staged on Saturday 19th November, and you can take a look at the race again below.
It was won by the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat (doesn’t run here), with Eldorado Allen in second and 2020 King George Chase winner Frodon back in third.
With 50% of the last 20 King George Chase winners having contested the Betfair Chase earlier that season this is a fair return.

55% Of the Last 20 King George Chase Winners Won Last Time Out
80% of the last 20 King George Chase winners finished in the top three last time out, but most will tick this trend – only Royale Pagaille falls down here.
However, with 55% having won their most recent race then this is certainly a stat to take a second glance at and will rule out several more. Those that DIDN’T taste victory last time out are – Frodon, Eldorado Allen, Millers Bank, Royale Pagaille & Ahoy Senor.
Trainer Paul Nicholls Has Saddled 12 King George Chase Winners
Trainer Paul Nicholls, or Mr. King George as he’s known over Christmas, is the most successful handler in the race’s history with a whopping 12 successes in the festive showpiece.
He’s sent out three of the last four winners too and since 2006 remarkably only three other trainers have won the King George – Nicky Henderson, Colin Tizzard and Willie Mullins.
The Dicheat trainer is once again mob-handed in the race he loves to win with the likely King George Chase favourite Bravemansgame looking his number one pick. Nicholls also has Hitman and 2020 King George winner Frodon entered at this stage. Could it even be a Nicholls 1-2-3 in the race?
Just Three Irish-Trained King George Chase Winners Since 2001
In contrast to the top record trainer Paul Nicholls has, it’s not been a great contest for the big yards across the Irish Sea. Since 2001 we’ve only had three Irish-trained winners of the King George Chase, but one of those was 12 months ago when the Willie Mullins runner Tornado Flyer took the honours.
Prior to that Tom Taaffe took the prize twice with Kicking King in 2005 and 2004, while Mullins’ only other success in the Boxing Day race came back in 2001 with Florida Pearl.
The only Irish raider entered is the Henry De Bromhead-trained Envoi Allen, who returned to winning form when taking the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal last month.
