ITV Racing Tips On Saturday at Sandown: Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase Looks a Cracker

The ITV Racing team are busy people this weekend with action in Ireland, Scotland and also Britain and that sole meeting on the the channel on the mainland is at Sandown.

We’ve a seven-race card at the Esher track to take in, with five on these LIVE on ITV3. These include the Grade One Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase, where 16 of the last 20 winners went onto run at the Cheltenham Festival, with two horses winning at both festivals – L’Homme Presse and Defi Du Seuil.

12 months ago we saw the Gordon Elliott-trained Gerri Colombe take the race and this year’s renewal looks a cracker with the Hermes Allen propping up the market with the best UK horse racing betting sites.

The Sandown action on ITV3 gets going at 1:25pm and will run through till 3:45pm.

ITV Racing Tips at Sandown On Saturday 3rd February 2024

1:25 Sandown: Virgin Bet Daily Price Boosts Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl3 (4yo+ 0-125) 2m4f ITV3: JINGKO BLUE

This Nicky Henderson runner JINGKO BLUE caught the eye when beating the useful Mascaacio at Newbury in early December. Has had a nice break to get over that and despite having topweight (12st) here looks on a fair opening mark (124) for his handicap debut. Onethreefivenotout and Classic Anthem can give him most to think about.

2:00 Sandown: Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 1m7½f ITV3: HARPER’S BROOK

HARPER’S BROOK looked to have the race at his mercy last time at Ascot until getting collared late on by Triple Trade. That came over 2m3f, so the drop back in trip here will be a big plus and is expected to make another bold bid from the front. Recent Lingfield second Saint Segal and the Harry Fry-trained In Excelsis Deo look the biggest dangers.

2:35 Sandown: Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m4f ITV3: LE PATRON

Hermes Allen will be popular in what looks a nice renewal of this Grade One Novices’ Chase after seemingly ‘running into one’ in the classy-looking Il Est Francais at Kempton last time.

Djelo fell early on at Lingfield last time so needs to get over that, while Colonel Harry returned to winning ways at Wetherby last time. However, the horse that beaten him here at Sandown in the King Henry VIII Novices’ Chase – LE PATRON.

The Gary Moore runner has now won all three starts over fences and we know the track suits. Hermes Allen will provide a different test, but there could be more to come still and this 6 year-old looks the value call.

3:10 Sandown: Virgin Bet Heroes Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m7½f ITV3: TANGANYIKA (e/w)

Many chances here, including Ed Keeper, Transmission and West Balboa, who is better than his recent flop in the Long Walk Hurdle.

But this is a race the Venetia Williams yard have won for the last two seasons and so their TANGANYIKA (e/w) is chanced. This 6 year-old ran well for much of the way last time at Lingfield, but eventually faded to be 5th (of 10) behind a fair sort in Nurse Susan.

He’s dropped a pound for that and still gets in here with only 10-4 to carry, plus the slightly better ground is expected to suit him in terms of lasting out a bit longer this time.

Charlie Deutsch, who has also ridden the last two winners of this race gets the leg-up.

3:45 Sandown: Virgin Bet Masters Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 3m ITV3: BANGERS AND CASH (e/w)

Another tricky race, in what is the final of the LIVE ITV contests at Sandown on Saturday. Badger Beers Chase scorer Blackjack Magic can go well, while recent winners Kestrel Valley and Dom Of Mary are others to note. But the call is to side with BANGERS AND CASH to land the money.

This 8 year-old hails from the Ben Pauling yard, who have their horses in fine fettle at the moment and he also looks to be coming to the boil with a decent third last time at Newbury. That came over 3m 2f too, so the slight ease in trip here to 3m looks a good move and will also enjoy the better ground, with his last success coming on a similar surface.
