ITV Racing Tips From Ascot – 1-2-3 Best Bets On Saturday 17th February
1:50 Ascot: Sodexo Live! Novices’ Chase (Registered As The Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase) (Grade 2) (Class 1) 3m ITV – KILBEG KING @ 3/1
SportsLens (Kyle Curran) 1-2-3 Tips: KILBEG KING ran fairly well behind French raider Il Est Francais in the Kauto Star at Kempton on Boxing Day and this could be a good chance to get off the mark over fences.
He has finished third three times so far this season since the switch to the larger obstacles but he jumps very well so he is worth chancing in what looks to be a competitive Novices’ Chase.
Anthony Honeyball confirmed earlier on in the week that Kilbeg King has been aimed at this race so he should go well on route to a potential tilt at Cheltenham next month in the National Hunt Chase.
Apple Away is of course greatly respected receiving weight, but her jumping likely cost her the race when seen last in the Hampton at Warwick. Brave Kingdom is another with a good chance looking to defend an unbeaten record since going chasing for the Paul Nicholls team.
- KILBEG KING @ 3/1
- Apple Away
- Brave Kindom
2:25 Ascot: Ascot Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 2m3½f ITV – RARE EDITION @ 11/2
SportsLens (Kyle Curran) 1-2-3 Tips: RARE EDITION has a top chance of following up from his Kempton win last time out and interestingly Harry Cobden remains in the saddle. That was his first time riding Charlie Longsdon’s charge and he has chosen to keep the ride rather than Paul Nicholls’ Irish Hill.
Given the fact he’s riding for Longsdon over his usual trainer Nicholls, Rare Edition clearly has a top chance in the eyes of Cobden. He looked to have plenty left in the tank when seen last, so the step up in trip should be no problem for the seven-year-old.
The son of Califet is also very versatile ground-wise, so if the going goes any softer than good-soft then that will not worry connections.
A return to hurdling seemed to help Jay Jay Reilly get back to form last time out when landing a good race at Kempton, so he has good place claims. Meanwhile, Bad has been knocking at the door for Ben Pauling this season and his recent wind surgery could prove positive.
- RARE EDITION @ 11/2
- Jay Jay Reilly
- Bad
3:00 Ascot: Swinley Handicap Chase (Class 1) 3m ITV – VICTTORINO @ 7/2
SportsLens (Kyle Curran) 1-2-3 Tips: VICTTORINO returns to 3m after an underwhelming display last time out when seeking a hat-trick. That trip around Cheltenham didn’t work out, so going back up is a huge bonus.
Also, his 2-2 record at Ascot speaks volumes, so he has to be respected back at to this venue after picking up two good wins here this season.
Victtorino can put that seventh last time out behind him at Cheltenham and this race suits him to a tee, so looks to be the one to beat in a hot race once again.
Threeuderthrufive has gone close in two G3 contests so far this campaign and can run well off top weight. Torn And Frayed is stepped up to 3m for the first time here and better ground could see him return to form after running in testing conditions at Cheltenham in his last three runs.
- VICTTORINO @ 7/2
- Threeunderthrufive
- Torn And Frayed
3:35 Ascot: Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) (Class 1) 2m5f ITV – PIC D’ORHY @ 9/4
SportsLens (Kyle Curran) 1-2-3 Tips: PIC D’ORHY was second in this race last year and has ever right to go one better this time around. Some of his best performances have come at Ascot and he last won here on reappearance when landing the 1965 Chase.
Things weren’t to be when conceding weight to Banbridge next time out, but he still finished second in the Silviniaco Conti Chase that day. With the record he possesses around Ascot, he has a solid chance of picking up a third win at the track.
Paul Nicholls also has a superb record in this race and another win in it this weekend would see him as the leading trainer in the contest with five victories.
Betting favourite L’Homme Presse is a classy horse himself, but he may want further with the Cheltenham Gold Cup a goal for next month, but it should be a feisty battle between himself and Pic D’Orhy. There isn’t too much that appeals about Ahoy Senor, but Lucinda Russell’s horses are going well right now, so he could bounce back.
- PIC D’ORHY @ 9/4
- L’Homme Presse
- Ahoy Senor
