Courage Mon Ami Clear Favourite from Goodwood Cup Runners

The John and Thady Gosden stable are no strangers to success in this race with superstar stayer Stradivarius winning it four times in a row between 2017 and 2020. Their yard has representation this year from Courage Mon Ami, who is favourite with online bookmakers and tackles some familiar opposition after he announced his arrival in this division at Royal Ascot last month.

There are a number of Goodwood Cup runners who re-oppose from there, most notably the second Coltrane for the Andrew Balding yard and Irish raider Emily Dickinson, who has course experience on the South Downs. Others who disappointed at the Royal meeting like last year’s St Leger hero from Doncaster races, Eldar Eldarov, and globetrotting horse Broome also line-up.

Complete Goodwood Cup Runners Guide 2023

1. Broome

Struggled to replicate Meydan form in UK after landing the Dubai Gold Cup in the spring. Excuses when hampered in last half-furlong and third in the Yorkshire Cup, but a non-stayer at Royal Ascot latest. Drop back in trip in his favour. Best recent form is on quick ground, but handles softer surface. Stable’s second string, however, and priced accordingly.

2. Coltrane

Second in the Gold Cup at Ascot races latest after Sagaro Stakes success there on reappearance. The worst turf run of a busy campaign last year came in this race when only fourth to Kyprios, but won the Doncaster Cup either side of solid seconds in the Lonsdale Cup and Long Distance Cup. Other Goodwood Cup runners will probably find this track more suitable.

3. Courage Mon Ami

Lightly-raced Frankel gelding unbeaten in four career starts including in handicap company over 1m 6f here on reappearance. Stepped out of that sphere and up to the highest level in facile fashion at Royal Ascot latest. Handles the track and the yard farmed this race with Stradivarius. Open to the most progress and the one they all have to beat.

4. Eldar Eldarov

Last year’s St Leger scorer disappointing in two starts beyond an extended 1m 6f, which raises some stamina doubts. An easier track than Ascot could help his chances of getting 2m on just his second try at that trip. Better off at the weights with Giavellotto from his reappearance second in the Yorkshire Cup, however. One of the Goodwood Cup runners with something to prove, but further progress can’t be ruled out.

5. Enemy

Heritage Handicap winner at Musselburgh races last year who only beat one rival when home in eighth in this race 12 months ago. Second in the valuable Red Sea Turf Handicap in Saudi Arabia after scoring over 1m 4f on first start of the year. Not able to match Middle East form in the UK since. Can be discounted.

6. Giavellottto

Fourth past the post in the St Leger, but promoted to third by the stewards. Ran a career best when landing the Yorkshire Cup latest but lucky to keep the race as hampered more than one rival. Worse off at the weights with Eldar Eldarov. Kept fresh for this and skipped the Royal meeting, however, so one of the Goodwood Cup runners with each way claims.

7. Lone Eagle

Two wins from three career starts at Goodwood. Non-stayer in the Ascot Gold Cup latest, but more to like about keeping on second in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester races before that. Soft ground a big help to this horse. May outrun his odds, but does have something to find with the market principals on ratings.

8. Ocean Wind

Entitled to come on for his first run in 771 days when third at Sandown races earlier in the month. Placed four times at Listed or Group 3 level, but this demands so much more than that. Although from a bumper background in the National Hunt code and stamina no issue, he has almost a stone to find on ratings with the fancied Goodwood Cup runners, so up against it.

9. Quickthorn

Dual Group 2 winner last year and unlucky fourth when hampered in the Yorkshire Cup on reappearance. Gained compensation when landing a Listed event on the Knavesmire latest. Versatile as regards ground but was found wanting on sole start at the highest level. Summertime is often his most productive period of the season, however. Proved difficult to peg back before if ridden positively from the front. Interesting contender.

10. Tashkhan

Close third on two of his three starts this season, but has had plenty of goes at a higher level and been found wanting. Significant jockey booking is intriguing, but major question mark if he has sufficient clash to get involved. Other Goodwood Cup runners simply appeal more.

11. Emily Dickinson

Sole filly in the line-up who stayed on from off the pace into third in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes at this meeting last year. Tough to catch right, but has shown a preference for soft ground when winning her final start of last season and on reappearance in the Vintage Crop. Confirmed that impression when reversing past form with Rosscarbery with Curragh Cup glory latest. Something to find with Courage Mon Ami on her Ascot Gold Cup fourth, however.
