Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus admits he would rather play as a striker, but insists he is happy to play wherever in order to help the team.

The 26-year-old arrived last summer with high hopes of leading the Arsenal frontline, but injuries have seen him embrace versatility this season.

“When I chose to move from City to Arsenal, Edu and Arteta spoke to me, and I made it clear that I’d like to play 9,” Jesus affirmed.

“That was Arsenal’s idea, for me to play 9, loose. This season has been different; we’ve had injuries, and in the last few games, I’ve played three up front. For a while, I thought I’d just say I wanted to play 9, but I’m here to help the team.

“I’m blessed by God to have this talent and the versatility to play in all three forward positions. I prefer not to choose.”

The Brazilian forward has featured on both wings and through the middle this season, filling the void left by injuries to the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard.

In the recent win against former club Manchester City, Jesus assumed the right-wing position and played the full 90 minutes. The victory propelled Arsenal level on points (20) with Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table.

Jesus is currently on international duty with Brazil, gearing up for matches against Venezuela and Uruguay in the coming week. He then faces a swift return to domestic action, with Arsenal set to host Chelsea on October 21.

It could be worth noting that Arsenal are exploring the possibility of signing Brentford’s Ivan Toney. The Bees are said to be open to a deal in the upcoming January transfer window, following Toney’s eight-month ban.

If Arsenal decide to recruit in January, it may have a direct impact on Gabriel Jesus’ role at the club.
