Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has expressed his belief that a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney will not take Arsenal to the Premier League title.

Toney’s future has been a hot topic lately, with considerable interest from Premier League clubs potentially leading to a move in the January transfer window. Among these clubs, Arsenal stand out as a top contender for the England international.

However, pundit Murphy raises doubts about Toney’s fit at the North London club. Toney’s career has been on the rise since joining Brentford in 2020, notably excelling last season. In 33 Premier League appearances, he netted 20 goals and provided four assists. His exceptional form generated anticipation of a summer move, but a ban related to betting rule violations postponed his transfer prospects until January.

Nevertheless, Arsenal and Chelsea remain interested in the £60million-rated striker. Both clubs seek a reliable number nine, with Arsenal aiming for a player capable of scoring 20 goals per season. Chelsea, on the other hand, have struggled to find a proven goal scorer.

Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes Toney might face difficulties fitting into Mikel Arteta’s system at Arsenal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy pointed out, “I think he lacks a little bit of dynamism and explosive power.

“Brentford play to his strengths. Arsenal are a footballing team. They play intricate football and pretty patterns, and Toney hasn’t been played in a team who does that.”

Murphy claims Chelsea’s more direct approach is similar to that of Brentford’s, making the Blues a more suitable destination for Toney.

As it stands, Arsenal are currently priced as favourites to sign the Brentford striker, closely followed by London rivals Chelsea.
