French Open Second Round Tip 1

Sinner to Win in Straight Sets

The eighth seed Jannik Sinner is primed and ready to surpass his best grand slam finish (quarter-final) this year and heads to Roland Garros as one of the tournament favourites.

The Italian made light work of first round opponent Alexandre Muller, hitting 30 winners and registering an 83% win percentage on his first serve in a straight set victory.

Although Wednesday’s opponent Daniel Altmaier pushed the 21-year-old prodigy to five sets at the US Open last year, he has shown formidable form so far this year with runs to the final four or further in Rotterdam, Indian Wells and Miami, and should have far too much quality here.

One can only hope for another instalment of the simmering Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry later in the tournament, but for now the Italian should have little trouble dispatching of his second round stumbling block.

French Open Second Round Tip 2

Both Players to Win a Set and Kokkinakis to Win

Now a veteran on the tour, Stan Wawrinka’s laboured first round victory may have a baring on this second round match-up with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who you may remember from Andy Murray’s grudge match at this stage of the Australian Open in January.

The 2015 champion was pushed all the way by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a four-hour marathon, but the Swiss native rolled back the years to show his grand slam quality and claim a 30th five-set career victory.

He will face Kokkinakis in the second round on Wednesday, who claimed a memorable straight set win in his opening match-up with Brit Dan Evans.

This will be the first time the duo have faced each other on the tour, which should throw up some surprises. Much of the opening stages are likely to be underlined by both players figuring out each other’s weaknesses, and we expect sets to be traded blow-for-blow in what could be a narrow affair.

However, the manner in which Kokkinakis swept aside Evans in the first round can not be ignored, and Wawrinka’s nearly-defeat to Vinolas leaves a lot to be desired.
