He’s already won the Ascot Gold Cup this week, but this Saturday will be an emotional one for Frankie Dettori as he’ll be in action for the final time at this meeting – can he end on a high?

Saturday 24th June 2023 Frankie Dettori Royal Ascot Rides
• 3.05pm – Jersey Stakes (Group 3) 7f: COVEY @ 2/1with Paddy Power
Surprisingly, Frankie Dettori has only won the Jersey Stakes once and that came back in 2004 with Kheleyf. However, he’s got a great chance of adding to that here with Covey. This John Gosden runner has won his last three races and the most recent was a facile success at Haydock over a mile. The drop back to 7f here looks fine too and we know he stays further which Frankie is sure to make full use of. Gosden will be looking for this third win in the Jersey Stakes, with those previous successes coming back in 2000 with Observatory and 1991 with Satin Flower. Frankie could get off to a ‘final day flyer’ here.
• 3.40pm – Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) 6f: KINROSS @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
Next, Frankie teams up with trainer Ralph Beckett and owner Marc Chan, who has been a big supporter of the Italian over the years, on Kinross. This classy sprinter has not been seen since running third at the Breeders’ Cup in November in the Mile, but before that was a tidy winner of the G1 Sprint Stakes on Champions Day here at Ascot. He acts on all ground and despite the 231-day break has gone well fresh in the past. From his 8 career wins, Frankie has steered him home five times so the horse and jockey clearly like each other. Dettori will be hunting his third win in this top Group 1 sprint, after wins on So Factual (1995) and Undrafted (2015), while trainer Ralph Beckett is yet to land this prize. Another fair opportunity for Dettori.
• 4.20pm – Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2) 1m 4f: FREE WIND @ 11/10 with Paddy Power
Frankie rode the mighty Doyen to win the Hardwicke Stakes in 2004 and his only other win in this contest came on Fanny Logan in 2020. The last-named was also for trainer John Gosden and Dettori teams-up with his old pal again in his final ride in the race on Free Wind. This 5 year-old has won 6 of her 8 career starts and has only been beaten once on the grass from 7 outings. We last saw her winning the G2 Middleton Stakes at York in May and the form of that win took a big boost earlier this week with the runner-up Rogue Millennium winning the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes. She’s rated 7lbs lower than the Hukum – her main rival here – but gets a handy 3lbs mares’ allowance to help. Frankie looks to have a big chance here to give Gosden his third winner in the race.
• 5.00pm – Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 6f: MUMS TIPPLE @ 9/1 with Paddy Power
The Richard Hannon yard were on the Royal Ascot scoresheet earlier in the week and have booked Frankie to ride this 6 year-old in the Wokingham Stakes. Mums Tipple was down the field in the Buckingham Palace Stakes last year but the drop back to 6f here will be in his favour. Dettori has also won on the horse in the past too – last season at Newmarket – while you feel the handicapper has given him a squeak by dropping him 6lbs from his last run and is rated 2lbs lower than when winning at Chelmsford in March. Draw 13 will give Frankie options too in a race he’s actually yet to win outright – his sole Wokingham success came in a dead-heat when riding Ratio back in 2003.
• 5.35pm – Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap) 1m 2f: KNOCKBREX @ 3/1 with Paddy Power
So, we come onto Frankie Dettori’s final ever Royal Ascot ride and the honour of this goes to young trainer Charlie Johnston – the son of Mark – with a horse called Knockerbrex. This 3 year-old has a chance too after beating a fair sort in Perfuse by 3 1/2 lengths at Pontefract in April and wasn’t disgraced over 1m4f the last day at York. The drop back to 1m2f looks a big plus (only career win came over this trip) and the Johnston yard have freshened him up with a month off. This race is a new one at Ascot – just the three past renewals. Frankie is yet to win the prize, but the plus is that he’s currently got a 21% strike-rate when riding 3 year-olds at the course, while the Charlie Johnston camp have their horses in decent order at the moment too. If he wins this we can be assured of a final ‘Flying Dismount’ at Royal Ascot and not a dry eye in the house – fingers crossed!
