What Is A Free Agent?
The term free agent has been thrown around over recent years, with many players filling the criteria, but what qualifies a player to sign on a free deal?
Players who are out of contract and are not signed to any club are available to join any interested parties without a transfer fee.
Additionally, these signings can be made during any part of the season and do not need to occur during the transfer windows in each respective league.
Who Is Still Available As A Free Agent?
David De Gea:
The Spanish shot-stopper was relieved of his duties at Manchester United in the summer, despite winning the Golden Glove last season.
De Gea made 415 appearances for the Red Devils, winning a Premier League, two Carabao Cups, FA Cup and Europa League.
Since leaving the red side of Manchester, the 32-year-old had been linked with a return to La Liga and possibly Saudi Arabia – however no club has made an agreement for his services.
During the end of his time at Old Trafford, the Spanish shot-stopper was reportedly earning over £300 thousand a week. These high wages are said to be the issue when negotiating with clubs, meaning he may have to lower his expectations.
Jesse Lingard
Another former Manchester United player who is yet to find a club, is English midfielder Jesse Lingard, after an unsuccessful spell at Nottingham Forest.
Lingard signed for Steve Cooper’s side in the summer of 2022, ending a life-long spell in Manchester, but after 17 Premier League appearances without a goal contribution, Lingard was released by the Midlands side.
Images of the former Forest midfielder emerged, where he was pictured training with both West Ham and Saudi Arabain side, Al Ettifaq.
However, neither David Moyes or Steven Gerrard signed the 30-year-old on a permanent basis and his search for a new club has continued.
Shkordan Mustafi
The once Arsenal defender has endured a whirlwind of a career since leaving the Gunners in 2020, signing for Schalke before being released in the summer of 2021.
La Liga side, Levante, gave the German a chance to regain his form in September 2021, but after just 15 appearances, Mustafi was once again released and is now on the hunt for a new club.
Roma have been linked with the 31-year-old as Jose Mourinho looks to turn things around in the Italian capital, but no official talks have began.
More Free Agents
Andre Ayew: The former Nottingham forest star was released in February and is yet to find a new club since the start of this year.
Jerome Boateng: Despite training with Bayern Munich over recent weeks, the 35-year-old did not impress Thomas Tuchel enough and is still looking for a suitor.
Karim Bellarabi: The German winger had been at Leverkusen for over a decade, but at 38-years-old was deemed surplus to requirements and remains without a club.
