Location of La Liga Teams

La Liga is host to a number of derby games and local rivalries. There are several hotbeds of football within Spain and in this section we’re going to take a look at La Liga teams and their cities.

We will go on to discuss the La Liga clubs that play in Madrid and Barcelona. The other big city derby that we will see in La Liga this season is the Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla.

Then there are the regional derbies, of which the biggest is the Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao. There are other Basque teams not currently in La Liga, such as Alaves and Eibar, while Osasuna are another nearby club who have some rivalries with these teams.

The Derbi de la Comunitat is the Valencian Country derby between Valencia and Villarreal. Historically it’s Valencia that are the more significant club in Spain, but in recent years it’s often been Villarreal that have been the better team.

La Liga Teams in Madrid

The Madrid derby is contested by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. This has always been a big fixture, but has become even more significant during Diego Simeone’s time at Atletico Madrid, during which they have been battling with Real for major honours. The rivals even met in the Champions League final in both 2014 and 2016.

Getafe are another top flight team based in Madrid. Historically their biggest rivalry is with Leganes, but with that side currently in the Segunda División, Getafe’s most important games are with Real and Atletico. The fourth Madrid based club are Rayo Vallecano, who have minor rivalries with all of the other Madrid sides.

Here are the clubs from Madrid, past and present, that have competed in La Liga.

  • Atletico Madrid
  • Getafe
  • Leganes
  • Rayo Vallecano
  • Real Madrid

La Liga Teams in Barcelona

The derbi Barcelona is played between FC Barcelona and Espanyol. As one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Barcelona are of course dominant in the fixture, but Espanyol have made things very difficult for them over the years.

Here are the clubs from Barcelona, past and present, that have competed in La Liga.

  • Barcelona
  • Condal
  • Espanyol
  • Europa
  • Sabadell

FAQs

[Q1]How many La Liga teams are there?[/Q1] [A1]There are 20 teams in La Liga. Each team plays each other twice, once home and once away, totalling 38 matches in all. Teams receive three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. The top team in La Liga at the end of the season is crowned the champion, while the bottom three are relegated. [/A1] [Q2]Are all teams in La Liga from Spain?[/Q2] [A2]La Liga is the top flight of Spanish football and was founded in 1929. The 20 teams involved aren’t necessary from mainland Spain, however, as the likes of Mallorca and Tenerife are based in the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, respectively.[/A2] [Q3]What clubs are in La Liga?[/Q3] [A3]The teams in La Liga for the 2022-23 season are Almeria, Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Cadiz, Celta Vigo, Elche, Espanyol, Getafe, Girona, Mallorca, Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano, Real Betis, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Valencia, Valladolid and Villarreal.[/A3] [Q4]Who is the best team in La Liga table?[/Q4] [A4]Real Madrid were the La Liga champions in the 2021-22 season. They also won the Champions League, in Carlo Ancelotti’s first season back as manager, having returned to the club for a second spell.[/A4] [Q5]What if La Liga teams finish outside the top four?[/Q5] [A5]If a top La Liga club ends up outside of the top four in the final standings at the end of the season, then it’s a similar situation to what would happen in the Premier League, Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga. Teams miss out on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and instead go into the UEFA Europa League if finishing fifth. Winning the Copa del Rey, Spanish football’s domestic cup competition, also carries a Europa League spot.[/A5]
