Paddington & Emily Upjohn the Coral Eclipse Runners Vying for Favouritism

This feature race of the entire Flat season at the Esher venue provides a first top level opportunity over middle distances in the UK for three-year-olds from the Classic generation to tackle their elders. Paddington was the subject of an ante post betting plunge last week, and the money down was dead right about the Coral Eclipse being his next target.

A rapid improver throughout the season for Irish master trainer Aidan O’Brien, connections turn him out relatively quickly here. Paddington takes the feature event among Sandown races today in en route to Glorious Goodwood, where the Sussex Stakes in early August is another possible engagement.

Battling him for favouritism is the only one of the Coral Eclipse runners with previous course and distance success, or experience of the Esher track with its stiff, uphill finish, in Emily Upjohn. John and Thady Gosden’s star filly was most impressive in the Coronation Cup on Epsom Downs during The Oaks card when last in action. Dual French Group 3 winner who chased home Pyledriver in the Hardwicke Stakes during the Royal meeting latest. Of all Coral Eclipse runners this year, he has the most to find on ratings. Needs a career best down in trip just to hit the frame.

3. Emily Upjohn

Sole course and distance winner in the line-up. Largely campaigned over further since, scoring in the Musidora at York races before just missing out in The Oaks at Epsom. Better than ever in the autumn on British Champions Day at Ascot races and added another Group 1 in open company latest. Drops back in trip, getting weight from all bar one rival. Shortlisted.

4. Paddington

Top rated and receives 10lb weight for age from older colts and geldings. Also getting 7lb from Emily Upjohn. None of the other Coral Eclipse runners have terms so firmly in their favour. Hugely progressive three-year-old that completed four-timer in St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot latest. The one to beat at these weights.
