From an initial six entries at the early closing stage, just five Betfair Chase runners remain for the first Grade 1 of the British National Hunt season. The emphasis is on quality over quantity, but that’s always been the way with this feature steeplechase at Haydock Park.

Betfair Chase Runners Guide 2022
Three of the five remaining Betfair Chase entries this year are previous winners at Haydock Park races in the past. They include two former victors in this extended 3m 1f stamina test. SportsLens experts give punters the lowdown on these runners:
A Plus Tard
- Age: 8
- BHA Rating: 180
- Jockey: Rachael Blackmore
- Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
- Form: 12231/2121/3213/212/121-
- Betfair Chase Odds:Â 2/5 with 10bet
Last year’s peerless winner A Plus Tard has never finished outside the first three in 14 starts over fences. He not only scored here 12 months ago on the bridle, but later landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup securing a second career victory at the Festival.
On all known form and ratings of the Betfair Chase runners here, this is A Plus Tard’s race to lose. It’s possibly a stronger renewal on paper but the popular trainer-jockey combo of Henry De Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore will fancy their chances of following-up.
Bristol De Mai
- Age: 11
- BHA Rating: 158
- Jockey: Daryl Jacob
- Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies
- Form: 4611323/21211122/221375/11632/1F34/229/12P/P32P-
- Betfair Chase Odds: 17/2Â with 10bet
Three-time Betfair Chase winner Bristol De Mai is the epitome of a course specialist. He had scarcely put a foot wrong around happy hunting ground Haydock until pulling up in this race last year. Now a veteran, he’s a difficult horse for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede and trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies to place.
A mark in the high 150s puts Bristol De Mai at the top of or above ceilings for handicaps. For all he has five wins and two seconds from eight career starts at this Merseyside track, he’s clearly vulnerable to younger horses in their prime.
Eldorado Allen
- Age: 8
- BHA Rating: 162
- Jockey: Brendan Powell Jr
- Trainer: Joe Tizzard
- Form: 23/1U/230/114225/132137-2
- Betfair Chase Odds: 11/1 with 10bet
Team Tizzard are no strangers to having Betfair Chase runners with Cue Card and Losintranslation giving the yard four winners of this since 2013. Eldorado Allen tries to follow in some pretty illustrious hoofprints off the back of his Denman Chase victory at Newbury races in February and a pleasing return to action.
His defeat of last year’s Betfair Chase runner-up Royale Pagaille can’t be ignored. It may be best to put a line through a subsequent effort in the Betway Bowl at the end of a long season. Considering Eldorado Allen had to give weight to leading British King George contender Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby races last time out, he could be overpriced here.
Frodon
- Age: 10
- BHA Rating: 164
- Jockey: Bryony Frost
- Trainer: Paul Nicholls
- Form: 1/3F543185/11101F115/32321350/12111/3314/14151/1470-1
- Betfair Chase Odds: 16/1Â with 10bet
A very popular public horse, Frodon hails from the yard of winningest Betfair Chase trainer Paul Nicholls. The last of his Ditcheat stable’s six successes here at Haydock was back in 2014, however. Frodon looked as good as ever carrying a welter burden around Wincanton in the Badger Beers Handicap Chase on reappearance earlier this month.
That wasn’t the plan but soft ground forced connections to reroute from the Champion Chase at Down Royal. Much like Bristol De Mai, in a conditions horse racing event like this, Frodon is vulnerable to younger legs. That won’t stop his legion of fans backing him under Bryony Frost, though, for all he came third in this race three years ago.
Protektorat
- Age: 7
- BHA Rating: 164
- Jockey: Harry Skelton
- Trainer: Dan Skelton
- Form: 2U57/22130/11221/2134-
- Betfair Chase Odds: 100/30Â with 10bet
As the youngest of all Betfair Chase runners, Protektorat is in theory open to the most improvement. That potential is certainly factored in to his price. On the bare Cheltenham Gold Cup result from March, he has about 17½ lengths to find with A Plus Tard here. Protektorat has never been to Haydock either.
Dan Skelton is an ambitious trainer and the heir apparent to the likes of Twiston-Davies, Nicholls and Nicky Henderson. Whether his top staying chaser has improved by the required amount remains to be seen. Protektorat has strong claims of hitting the frame, but also plenty to find with the favourite.
