Aston Villa have began negotiations with Lyon midfielder and Algeria International Houseem Aouar as Unai Emery looks to bolster his new squad.

According to reports the Villains have turned their attention to securing the signature of Aouar, after talks with Marseille over the signing of Matteo Guendouzi fell through. Arsenal had been close to signing the Algerian in the summer of last year, however negotiations stalled and he stayed in France.

Aouar made his debut for Lyon in 2017 and has been one of the most exciting prospects in Ligue 1 over recent years. The midfielder switched his international allegiance from France to Algeria, after making only one appearance under Didier Deschamps.

However Unai Emery’s side are rapidly running out of time, with only a matter of hours left to bring in some fresh faces. Aouar’s contract with Lyon runs out at the end of the year and the Algerian has shown no interest in renewing, which leaves January as their best chance to make a profit.

With the exit of Philippe Coutinho looking more and more likely, the Villains are in pursuit of a suitable replacement. Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire has been a 3/1 favourite to join the Villains, according to UK betting sites. However, with Maguire’s arrival looking unlikely the signing of Aouar would be a welcomed addition.
